Thank You Too
February 23, 2009|
Yesterday I was on a plane and happened to sit next to a nice man who had retired after 30 years in the Navy and who now worked in Veteran's Affairs in his state. Right as the plane landed, he thanked my husband for his service, which is always nice to hear. I, in turn, thanked him for his! And then he said, "And thank you for letting him serve." I had never had anyone say this to me before, and I appreciated it. This man knows that a military commitment is one that the whole family makes, and it was very sweet of him to acknowledge my role.
I always get to sit next to the nicest people on planes...

You do always sit next to nice people on planes. When pinning Mark's Captain rank on today, our commander congratulated me as well. The man always emphazised the importance of spouses and their support. It was really nice. And humbling, I think. Spouses rarely hear thank you except from the astute civilians.

The only astute civilians I know are other milwives.

My husband has been retired now for two years. We went to Disney World over Christmas break and when we were flying back we had to go through security at the airport. We both had our military ID's (we rarely know where our drivers licenses are - we're just used to showing the ID's :) and the lady checking them asked how long Mike served. He said 21 years and she turned to me and said, "Thank you for what you did through all of those years too - people often forget to thank the families" and she's right .. that meant a lot!
