The SpouseBUZZ Book Club Features "Shared Courage"

|

Shared Courage: A Marine Wife's Story of Strength and Courage, by Michelle Keener is our pick for the third book to be featured in the SpouseBUZZ Book Club.

The Quantico Sentry has a nice summary of the book:

‘‘Shared Courage” by Michelle Keener is a touching story of a country at war, a husband on deployment, and a wife searching within herself for the courage to keep her family afloat.

Keener tells the story of the back-home warriors, the women who fought the good fight on the home front while their husbands fought the war abroad.

From the beginning, military life was not easy for Keener, and she shares her struggles to – as Marines would say – adapt and overcome. Before Keener married, she was studying to become a nun. Unlikely as marriage seemed to her at the time, she followed her heart, which led her to Paul Keener, a Marine communications officer. After their short courtship and marriage, Keener found herself in unfamiliar territory.

A stranger to the Marine Corps, Keener describes her intimidating arrival at Quantico and her adjustment to military life. But suddenly her problems with base housing and meeting the neighbors seemed obsolete: on Sept. 11, 2001, planes hit the World Trade Center and the Pentagon and marked the beginning of a long and emotional road for Paul and Michelle Keener, as well as for the rest of the country.

We'll begin discussion threads in a couple of weeks, this will give you time to order your copy of Shared Courage and begin reading. Once we've wrapped up the discussion threads, we'll interview Michelle and post the podcast on SpouseBUZZ. One SpouseBUZZ reader will be chosen to participate in our interview with Michelle. More on that later.

If you're new to the SpouseBUZZ Book Club, so far we've read and reviewed two great books, While They're at War by Kristin Henderson and Household Baggage: The Moving Life of a Soldier's Wife by Marna Krajeski. Both are worth the investment in time and money to read, so I would encourage you to read them.

You can listen to the podcasts with Kristen here and Marna here.

I wanted to encourage everyone to add this book to your summer reading list. Pick it up and join us for a discussion. This Navy girl was hesitant about reading this book at first, but that quickly faded. I've chatted with Michelle via email and she really was so excited about us picking her book. If you are new to the military life, curious about Marine Wife life or want to support a fellow Military spouse, please join me while I read it a second time with all of you!
