Does Your Resume Need Professional Help, Too?

After months and months of searching for a job, I knew I must be doing something wrong. I suspected that there was something the matter with my resume.

I am searching for jobs in the administrative and financial industries; specifically for an Administrative Coordinator/Assistant and Financial Representative position.  I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Consumer Economics.

But those degrees were not turning into interviews.

So I asked my friends and former co-workers to review and edit my resume. They all took a look, but hardly any changes were made. They didn’t know any more about resumes than I did.

In my mind, a major resume revision was essential. Maybe a professional resume service was what I needed to get me noticed for an interview?

I contacted a service called CareerPerfect which partners with Military.com. I signed up for the cover letter and resume service. My assigned personal writer, Caleb, then contacted me through email and gave me step-by-step instructions.

I had to fill out some basic questions about my work, my education and my volunteer experience. He said to be generous with my information and I was.

Then I was supposed to state my goals and strengths. The next step was a work experience section in which they asked about my skills, what technologies I utilized, and additional contributions or accomplishments.

After filling out all the sections and attaching my current cover letter, resume, and job description I hit the submit button.

Caleb emailed me back in a day and a half with my very much revised and refined resume and cover letter.  He then asked me to review and edit it and resubmit it to him with any changes. A few hours later, I had my final product.

My new resume and cover letter were revised to a professional format that emphasized my skills, attributes, and experience.  My key contributions from each job were added.  He reworded my summary of qualifications to highlight my strengths.

In a million years, I would not have been able to make the changes that my skilled writer made because that is not what I do best—but I do need a future employer to get a chance to see me at my best with a solid resume.

I have received a few hits from posting my new resume this week.  Fingers crossed I will get an interview soon.

I couldn’t be any happier with my new resume and cover letter. It not only looks better but has instilled confidence in me again. Is a professional written resume and cover letter worth the cost? In my opinion, it most definitely is!
