During the second half of the program, we'll be joined by Justin Schmitt, USAA's Executive Director of Property and Casualty Communications. Many military families rent their homes and apartments so we'll speak with Justin about the benefits of purchasing renter's insurance; why it's important, what it covers and how much it costs.

Tim and Justin will be taking your calls and answering your questions. In honor of Military Spouse Appreciation Day (May 9), USAA will present two lucky callers (must be a military spouse) with iPod Nanos, so get ready to phone your questions in. You could walk away with a brand new iPod!

Grace and candor....

|

Some people can go through trials and tribulations, and do it with such grace and candor, I am left amazed and humbled.

Tonight on SpouseBuzz Talk Radio we spoke with Reid Stanley who authors the blog A Storm in Afghanistan.  Reid  is an active duty soldier, who lost his wife to cancer 408 days ago.  He shared his family's story through illness, treatment, death, funeral, and grief.......If you have a moment, please listen to the program, Reid really is a no nonsense and open with his care, and love for his wife.  Please listen to the show.

Reid, is currently involved in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer

I'd like to announce that I've decided to partake in the Avon - Walk for Breast Cancer.

The walk will be 26.2 miles long, or more recognizable as the length of a marathon. I think that's significant as battling cancer is often best thought in terms of a marathon - it's a long race.

I'll be walking in Washington, DC - where Ellicia found special memories on our last trip. And significantly, it's the weekend of her birthday - she would have been 41.

Avon's foundation requires a commitment to ensure the successful goal of the walkers.  Each walker must make a commitment of a minimum of $1800 in contributions.

I am asking for YOUR help. I'd like to blow past that goal, personally. Breast cancer, like so many cancers, is a horrible disease. We need to keep funding the research to DEFEAT this disease - before it claims too many more of our mothers, wives, daughters, sisters... and little known fact, the men in our society, too.

Please, go to my Avon website where you can donate directly.

If that doesn't work, then you can also click the button below, and those donations will go 100% to the walk.

Thank you for your support.  It'll be a long, hard walk... but, as Ellicia taught me, anything is possible.

Tonight on SpouseBUZZ Radio!!

|

Join Guard Wife and I tonight at 9 EST at  SpouseBuzz Talk Radio!

Top of the 9pm hour, we will be joined by fellow military Spouse Tiffany Booher, who authored the book Spouses Also Serve.  We will be discussing her book, and we will also be discussing how one becomes published, the process of writing, and how her idea came to fruition.

The second half of the show, Reid Stanley will join us.   Reid is not only a member of the armed services, but is a fellow blogger.  He is joining us to discuss the Avon walk for cancer for his wife Ellicia, who passed  away 408 days ago, after a long battle with breast cancer.  Reid now finds himself in an unusual position at such a young age, as a single working parent, and widow.  I have a lot of questions for Reid, as I have been a reader of his blog for quite some time...

Join us.

Mark your calendars! First, for you Ft. Hood spouses, you may already know about the "Salute to our Heroes" event that will take place at Ft. Hood on April 11. The event is not open to the general public, only "Military and Family members, retirees, Gold Star Families, DOD civilians and contractors are invited to attend for free. More than 80,000 Soldiers, Family members and DOD civilians are expected to attend." Those of us not in the Ft. Hood area can watch the event courtesy of our friends at SyncLive, who will broadcast the event worldwide.

We'll get a behind the scenes look at the event this Thursday, when we talk with celebrity rock personality Metal Sanaz (a busy lady these days) and SyncLive CEO Aric Berquist on SBTR. Tune in at 9:00 p.m. EST by clicking here.

And for tonight....JP Borda, a good friend of SpouseBUZZ and a fellow blogger, will be one of the soldiers featured in a PBS Frontline documentary tonight. The film is called Bad Voodoo's War and was directed by another friend of SpouseBUZZ, filmmaker Deborah Scranton. I admire Deborah's work because she allows the soldiers to tell their own stories without editorial interference. I wrote a review of her first film, The War Tapes. Based on that experience, I expect great things out of tonight's film. Click here to check your local listings and find out when the film will air in your area. A preview after the jump:

March Madness and the Biggest Prize Giveaway Yet on SBTR - UPDATED: Show to be Rescheduled

|

UPDATED and BUMPED: Tonight's show is canceled as there is a scheduling conflict for one of our guests. We will let you know when the show is rescheduled. We apologize for the inconvenience, but these things happen from time to time.

SpouseBUZZers - I've been out of town for a while and it's good to be back home. I'm just now catching up on all the BUZZ I've missed while I was away. Looks like I missed a lot...

March has been a tough month for SBTR given that our March shows departed from the usual Thursday evening slot. We've had some radio/switchboard glitches on top of it. This is March Madness, after all. The madness continues tonight.

We have a very interesting show for you this evening so please plan to listen and join us in the chat room. Tonight, we'll feature two segments. Our guests for both segments will be experts from USAA. We're devoting one segment to a growing problem, identity theft. Tune in and learn how to protect yourself from identity thieves. Because military families move so often and many of us are serial renters, we'll also feature a segment on the merits of purchasing renter's insurance. This is an important topic for everyone who is renting a home or an apartment.

USAA has donated an incredible prize for us to give away on tonight's show. One lucky caller will receive the prize, so get your questions ready. Trust me, you do not want to miss a chance to win this prize! Note: Previous prize winners are not be eligible.

Click here to listen to the show at 9:00 EST tonight.

Beginning April 3, SBTR will go back to the Thursday evening line up.

Tonight on SBTR: Walking the Tightrope

|

Over the past week or so, there's been some talk of overflowing plates here at SpouseBUZZ. There are times when it seems there just aren't enough hours in the day and many of us feel overextended, overwhelmed, tired and just plain stressed out. Tonight's SBTR topic couldn't have come at a better time. Life is hectic, and military life has a way of lobbing curve balls in our direction. We're looking forward to speaking with Ellen Miller about how we can take steps to achieve some sanity and balance in our busy lives.

Ellenmiller

Click here tonight at 9:00 EST to join us. The chat room will also be open, we'll see you there.

You can read Ellen Miller's bio after the jump.

A Great Chat with Two Inspiring Milspouses

|

Last night, airforcewife and I had a wonderful chat with Babette Maxwell of Military Spouse Magazine and Marna Krajeski of Household Baggage fame. We learned a lot about what goes into the making of magazine and we got an update from Marna on the the status of her second book, which is due out in May.

Our conversation was so interesting that we held Babette and Marna over for an additional half hour, so those of you in the chat room were not able to hear the last half of the conversation. Click here to listen to the show.

A reminder that our next show will be TUESDAY, March 18, rather than Thursday. We're so excited to welcome Ellen Miller to the program next week. Normal Thursday programming at 9:00 EST will resume in April.

I'm off to handle a PCS crisis this weekend. Can't think of a better way to spend a weekend.... Will probably have some blog material when I come back. What are the rest of you going to do? Any Spring Breakers out there? Whatever you do, enjoy your weekend!

SBTR Programming Note

|

A change in time for tonight's show with Babette Maxwell and Marna Krajeski. Rather than the usual 9:00 p.m. EST start time, tonight's show will air at 8:00 EST. Hopefully, it's not too much of an inconvenience for you. Many of the regular chatters tend to file into the chat room about 8:30 anyway. Speaking of chat rooms, we'll meet you there tonight

SBTR Announements: Good Stuff Coming Your Way

|

Tomorrow on SpouseBUZZ Talk Radio, we'll be having a discussion with military spouses who have blazed trails and discovered ways to connect with, and cater to, military spouses. Joining us will be Babette Maxwell, Co-founder and Executive Editor of Military Spouse Magazine, and Army wife and author Marna Krajeski. We may be joined by another pioneer in the milspouse world, too. Tune in tomorrow evening at 9:00 EST.

Speaking of SBTR, we have a special announcement to make. Katherine Fugate, series creator and executive producer of the hit Lifetime television series, Army Wives, will be joining us on SBTR April 24th at 9:00 p.m. EST. Katherine will be our guest for the full hour, and she'll be taking your calls, so get your questions ready. Production on the second season of Army Wives (which will include five more episodes than last year's season) was halted for a while due to the writer's strike, but production resumed last week.

How about a stroll down memory lane? I can't wait for these types of discussions to resume! If you want to get warmed up for Katherine's appearance on SBTR, she'll be involved in a live chat tonight at 11:00 EST. Details here.

Update: One more item - for SpouseBUZZ 411 members, you will continue to receive email alerts for big news, but I'm re-working the newsletter tool, so we will suspend the monthly newsletter until further notice. Hope to resume in late-April. Once we're done tweaking, it will be bigger and better. Thanks for your patience.

Tonight on SpouseBUZZ Talk Radio

|

Tonight on SBTR, ArmyWifeToddlerMom and I will be speaking with Army wife and author, Sara DaWalt. Sara wrote 365 Deployment Days: A Wife's Survival Story. (sorry, had broken link - link is fixed now)

Dewalt

Sara's book is an astonishingly candid look at her life while her husband was deployed to Iraq. We look forward to speaking with Sara tonight about her book.

Please join us at 9:00 p.m. EST tonight on SBTR, and in the chat room.

Ellen Miller to Talk With Milspouses About....Balance

|

Sometimes, I lean so far to the right that I can feel my right ear skimming the pavement. The next day, I lean so far to the left that my left ear is dragging the carpet. No, I'm not talking about politics here, I'm talking about life.

Life is hectic. And for military spouses, many of us find that we're constantly juggling extra responsibilities when our spouse is away for training, TDY and deployments. Suddenly, our workload and responsibilities have expanded, yet there's still only 24 hours in one day. Things must be done, and we have to figure out how to maximize those 24 hours and check all the blocks that must be checked.

PTSD: Difficult questions answered on SBTR

|

ArmyWifeToddlerMom is so smart!  She initiated a great show on SBTR about PTSD.  You should listen to it for some great information!!!  Dr. Roca, an expert on PTSD who works with military veterans, gives his expertise and some great perspectives on PTSD.  So listen in!!!

And if you have any questions about PTSD, please ask your question in the comments section so we can do our best to get the answers you are looking for.  And if you have questions about TBIs (Traumatic Brain Injury) and how it may/ may not relate to PTSD, listen to the show and send us your questions.  If you don't ask your questions, we can't answer them!

Taking care of ourselves, a fantastic reminder on Spousebuzz Talk Radio Sunday night

|

I was reminded not so very long ago by a friend, that it is imperative that Mothers must take care of themselves.

I find this of particular importance to military spouses.  We are often alone, and advocating for ourselves, our children, our significant others.  some things slip through the cracks.

I have spoke with many women who do not get regular medical care.  Not because of lack of appropriate care, physicians, or money.  It is usually the lack of time.  We are often so busy taking care of those around us, we forget to take care of ourselves.

We skip meals, we do not make the time to exercises, relax, and many of us skip those regular trips to the gynecologist, dentist, and our Family Practice physicians.

The Airmen and the Headhunters

|

I know with the nail-biting Superbowl last night, a lot of SpouseBUZZ readers and listeners missed the live version of our radio show.  It's okay.  I forgive you.  After all, we're all aware that sports are really a second religion for military folk!

But never fear!  Our radio shows are archived!  That's always helpful, but especially so for the episode of SpouseBUZZ Radio last night, in which we interviewed former State Department FSO and author Judith Heimann about her recent book - The Airmen and the Headhunters.

The story is inspiring to everyone, but especially for military spouses.  Much like we can relate to the broader story of family in World War II in books like War and Remembrance (one of my personal favorites), The Airmen and the Headhunters is an incredible story that I, as a military spouse, found myself almost living in my head as I read it.  And, incredible as it sounds, it's all true.

The basic story is this...

You DON'T Want to Miss This!

|

Don't forget - tonight's special edition of Spousebuzz Radio will be on at 9 pm Eastern!  We'll discuss a story of downed airmen in hostile territory, natives who risked their lives to save those Americans, and the incredible final outcome of this story.

And what a story it is - one so inspiring that all mil-spouses should hear it.

Hear it tonight at 9 pm - on SpouseBUZZ Radio!  As always, there will be time to call in later in the show - to 646-478-5665 and the chat room is sure to be hopping.  See you there!

A Journey Through Time: A Show Not to be Missed

|

One of the things we learned after talking with Kristin Henderson about her book, is that our generation of milspouses owe a lot to those who came before us. Specifically, the Vietnam-era wives. Many procedures, such as casualty notification, were revamped thanks to input from the past generation, who had to endure some rather harsh conditions.

TRICARE: Have Questions? Get Answers.

|

When you say the word TRICARE, a lot of emotions boil to the surface. Mostly confusion. The few times that it's been mentioned here at SpouseBUZZ is proof of that. To be fair, we haven't probed the topic adequately, but that's about to change because TRICARE is a huge issue for military families.

We are thrilled to have the ear of Army Major General Elder Granger, the Deputy Director of TRICARE Management Activity. On Thursday, February 7, General Granger will join us on SBTR for the full hour to discuss TRICARE, and to answer your questions. Also joining us will be Francine Forestell, Director of Customer Service. This is your chance to ask questions of the people who know TRICARE inside and out.

We anticipate this will be one of our more heavily attended shows, so we are asking that you submit questions before January 29. We'll ask as many questions as we can during the hour. You can leave your question in the comment section below, or, if you're more comfortable, click here to send an email with "TRICARE" in the subject line.

We're looking forward to speaking with Maj. Gen. Granger and Ms. Forestell next month.

Don't forget to mark February 7 on your calender. Come back and listen to the show so that you can hear the answer to your question. The show will air at 9:00 p.m. EST on February 7.

SBTR: Thursday, January 3

|

You may have noticed the gold ESGR banner on the right-side of the SpouseBUZZ home page. Tomorrow evening on SBTR, AWTM and Guard Wife will be speaking with Lt. Colonel Michelle Barrett, Chief of Strategic Communication for the National Committee, Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve. The ladies will discuss the 2008 Freedom Award, as well as other National Guard/Reserve issues.

Our second segment will feature an interview with Sarah White, author of the children's book, Sammy's Soldier.

Tune in tomorrow evening at 9:00 EST. See you in the Chat Room.

Tonight on SpouseBUZZ Talk Radio...

|

...we'll be talking to Kathy Rockel of TRS Institute and fellow military spouse, Briget Rischawy. You may remember that we discussed transportable careers a few months ago on SBTR. We recently received this comment from a military spouse curious about working from home:

Is this for real? It does sound too good to be true? Do you know more information that can help me to decide on starting a career in this area? Can you tell me more? Thanks!

Briget just completed her MT Training and is now working for TRS. We'll ask her if this really is "too good to be true?"

We'll use the second half of the program to discuss the Holidays, military-style. A few of the SpouseBUZZ authors will join us and we'll be talking your phone calls. We want to hear all about your Christmas and what you have planned for New Year's Eve/Day.

Join us tonight at 9:00 EST on SpouseBUZZ Talk Radio (SBTR) and in the chat room.

Technology is Wonderful...Most of the Time

|

Last night we were hit with a double whammie. Some of us had issues logging into the chat room and the switchboard for SBTR went haywire. About 15 minutes into the show, the wrinkles smoothed out and we got on with the show featuring Cliff Hudson. You can click here to listen (and fast forward to about 15 minutes in unless you just want to hear AWTM and I in techno-panic mode. In which case, you'll probably have a great chuckle at our expense).

We're usually the ones who pull surprises on the radio, but last night Cliff surprised us with a wonderful announcement.

Christmas day can be tough on some military families. If you have deployed spouses and will be home alone on Christmas, and if you are interested in meeting in the chat room on Christmas evening, send me an email or leave a comment. We'll see about arranging a Christmas chat for those of you in this situation if there is some genuine interest. I'll be happy to take a break from my nieces and nephews (who will be running on all cylinders) to have some adult conversation!

Talking Resumes Tonight

|

Last week on SpouseBUZZ Talk Radio, we received some great advice from two USAA financial planners. Click here to listen if you missed the show.

Tonight, the talking resumes. We'll be speaking to one of our favorite musicians, Cliff Hudson, about his new album, Outside the Wire.

We'll also get Cliff's reaction to SpouseBUZZ LIVE Ft. Bragg/Pope AFB. Cliff performed at SpouseBUZZ LIVE and tonight will be the first chance we've had to talk to him about his observations.

Cliffashley_2

Join us at 9:00 p.m. Eastern on the radio and in the chat room. Cliff will be taking your calls. You can be live, on-air with Cliff by dialing 646.478.5665.

See you tonight on SBTR.

Hey Honey, How Much are Ya Worth?

|

Don't miss tonight's SpouseBUZZ Talk Radio!

We'll be talking to J.J. and Jeremy from USAA about two very important topics - avoiding holiday debt, and life insurance.  The latter is a conversation AirForceGuy and I have had many times, and will continue to discuss - well - probably forever.  How much is enough?  How much should it cost?  What are the pros and cons of SGLI and other plans?  How do we figure out how much we need?

Don't miss our show tonight, when armywifetoddlermom and I will be talking about this at 9 PM Eastern.  As always, our chat room will be open and hopping, and you can call in with questions at (646) 478-5665.

Make sure to tune in to SpouseBUZZ Radio tonight!

A Change in SBTR Programming

|

Everyone is so busy with the Holiday Season, so we've decided to temporarily drop our Sunday evening Pajama Party shows on SBTR. We'll continue to be on-air every Thursday evening at 9:00 EST, and plan to resume regular programming after the New Year.

However, if you still want to meet in the chat room on Sunday evenings to chat with other milspouses, it will be open.

We Are Family

|

If you haven't caught last night's SpouseBUZZ Radio show with Ashley, you really MUST catch it in the archives here.

Our military family community was out in force, helping one of our newest members talk out what to expect when you're expecting... deployment.  And the results were amazing.  From the necessary forms to intimate items in CARE packages to deployment induced "multiple personality disorder" we covered it all.  And our mentoring spouses couldn't stress enough that none of that makes us weirdos.

There was great advice all around as we pulled together as a family - something for all of us, whether we're on our first deployment or our fifth.  As Sarah put it, deployments are like snowflakes and every one is different.

And welcome to the family, Ashley - we know you'll do just fine!

Let's Help a Lady Out

|

Tonight on SpouseBUZZ Radio we'll be doing things just a little different - because the show will be all about YOU calling in to give our guest advice.

We'll say hello to Ashley, whose soldier is just about to begin his first deployment to the Sandbox.  Ashley has a lot of questions, and would like a lot of advice on what to expect and how to handle her first deployment.  We'll talk good-byes, reunions, gremlins and care packages - and we need your expertise!

What worked for you?  What advice do you have?  Trust me, we'll be taking notes...

Please join us tonight at 9 pm Eastern.  You can pick up the show here.  The call in number is (646) 478-5665, and as always - the chat room will be in full swing.

I can't wait to "see" you all there again!

Regular Programming Will Resume...Tomorrow

|

The SpouseBUZZ team has played the planes, trains and automobiles game today as they made their way from Fayetteville back home. We're going to get some shut-eye tonight, but we'll be back to normal tomorrow, so please stay tuned.

We just wrapped up our radio recap of the event. Thanks to those of you who called into the show. Click this link to hear the archive of the show. Note: It may take an hour or so for the audio archive to kick in, so try back later if you don't hear the show on the first click.

As promised during SpouseBUZZ LIVE Ft. Bragg/Pope, tomorrow I'll be posting some of the links we discussed at the event.

Thank you, Fayetteville. Thanks for such a warm reception. It was an honor to spend the day on your home turf.

Now, sleep.....

Knock, Knock...

|

...Anyone home?

Wow - you guys have been super quiet this weekend. Doing fun stuff, I hope....

Don't forget that tonight is the Sunday evening SpouseBUZZ Pajama Party. Join us on SpouseBUZZ Talk Radio and in the chat room at 9:00 p.m. EST. One of our favorite people will be our mystery guest, and we'll be picking up where we left off last. I'm sure you won't want to miss this conversation...

Ben Stein's The Real Stars on SpouseBuzz Talk Radio Thursday, November 15 @2:30 EST

|

Images_2

Please join us Thursday, November 15th, at 2:30pm EST as SpouseBuzz authors discuss the book of the month Ben Stein's The Real Stars with featured guest Ben Stein, live on SpouseBuzz Radio.

Mr. Stein, wrote a popular column  called Monday Night at Morton's which featured the piece called The Real Stars.  A piece that went viral on the Internet in 2003.  I recall getting the column sent to me in at least 15 emails, while my DH was serving in Iraq.  I, for one was not surprised at the content of the message, but the messenger.  Such support is typically not garnered from the mainstream media, or Hollywood.

Mr. Stein's biography is one of the most impressive to date.  He is an economist, and an attorney.  He was also a speech writer for  Gerald Ford and President Nixon (although, is quick to point out the "I am not a crook" line was not his).  He continues to be a syndicated writer for the Wall Street Journal, Barron's, The Washington Post and several other publications.

So what struck a chord with the military audience?

|

It's Pajama Party time tonight on SpouseBUZZ Talk Radio. We'll be live, on air at 9:00 p.m. Eastern. The chat room will be open, so please plan to meet us there.

Tonight's mystery guest is very interesting. This person has lots of great stories to tell from an insider's perspective. Hint: Big house, dogs. Don't miss it.....

Down With Pleated Pants!

|

I think that the horrible thing that is pleated pants was the biggest agreement on air and in the chatroom of last night's SpouseBUZZ Radio show!  As Stormi said, "Pleated pants are tools of the Devil."

We had a great time talking to our fashion consultant Stormi, who outlined everything to look for in a suit to last for decades.  We discussed cut, style, color, ties, and even cuffed pants!

We had a great time, and were even graced with a call in from AirForceGuy, who brought in his own observations on the quest for a great suit.

You don't want to miss this one!  The archived link for the show is here.

Fashion Sense? What Fashion Sense?

I recently had to go shopping with my husband for a suit.

It didn't go well.  Not well at all.

This and That

Last night's SpouseBUZZ Pajama Party was a lot of fun. Our mystery guest was the wonderful Marna Krajeski, whom we've interviewed before after featuring her book in the SpouseBUZZ Book Club. Visit Marna's website here, and be on the lookout for her new book, Household Baggage Handlers: Military Wives Share Their Moving Stories, which will be published in May, 2008. Last night, Marna told us what we can expect to read in her upcoming book. We love Marna!

Oh, and AWTM dissed airforce wife again during last night's show. Okay, not really, but we both expressed concern that airforcewife had been uncharacteristically quiet during her move, and we reached the conclusion that she must be incarcerated. I'm happy to report that isn't the case as she resurfaced this morning, but I think we can all look forward to some entertaining PCS posts in the near future. Plus - airforcewife will be hosting Thursday's show while AWTM, Sarah and I are in Las Vegas. The topic - Queer Eye for the Military Guy. I'll let airforcewife tell you more about the show. I should note that this is airforcewife's chance to get back at us for talking behind her back...

Catching Up

|

I'm still on the road searching for DoD stickers, so I'm late in publishing this post.

Last Sunday evening, our mystery guest on SpouseBUZZ Talk Radio was Sean Gilfillan of To the Fallen Records. You may remember that a couple of weeks ago, we had his partner, Sidney DeMello on the show, along with singer/songwriter/Marine Cliff Hudson. The show with Sidney and Cliff was highly rated, so we wanted to explore more of what TTFR is doing, which is why we invited Sean on the show. Sean was gracious enough to give our listeners a sneak listen to two songs that will be featured on the country and rock albums that will be released on December 4. Sean also gave us a sneak peek at what the cover of the country album will look like:

Tears....

I am so impressed with what To the Fallen Records is doing. It's such an incredible concept. To hear our show with Sean, and listen to the songs that he allowed us to preview, click here. I'll also tell you that Sean assures us that we have yet to hear some superb talent, so I can't wait to see what they come up with next.

Also, if you missed last night's show, we talked about SpouseBUZZ LIVE. What it is, why we do it, why it's important and what it's all about. Our guests were three milspouses who have attended previous LIVE events. Click here to listen to the show and find out why you don't want to miss a LIVE event when it comes to a town near you.

And finally, a teaser..... Remember when I told you that you would kick yourself if you missed the show that featured Cliff Hudson? Well, just a warning, you will be kicking yourself if you miss Sunday's show, too. Trust me on this one. Don't wake up Monday morning regretting that you missed out. Our mystery guest is nothing short of incredible. Warning issued....

It's Pajama Party Time...

|

Tomorrow evening on SpouseBUZZ Talk Radio, we'll have our weekly Pajama Party. Who will be our mystery guest? Well, you'll have to tune in to find out. I'll just say that we'll be continuing the music theme, but with a twist.

We're going to have those of you in the chat room rate some brand new music. Military-themed, of course. American Idol for milspouses! Join us at 9:00 Eastern tomorrow evening as we chat in the chat room while the show is live.
