Tonight on SpouseBUZZ Radio!

|

Tonight on SpouseBUZZ Radio we have a very special show - Dondi Scumaci, author of the books Designed for Success and Ready, Set, Grow!

Dondi writes and speaks about the issues that confront women in the workplace, and gives us solutions on how to turn those situations around to our best advantage.  And let's face it, for military spouses with the constant moves and uncertainty of our lifestyle, her advice is very timely!

In the beginning of Designed for Success, Dondi presents a checklist:

*  Sometimes I don't believe in myself enough - I second guess myself and look for permission and approval

*  I don't want to let anyone down, so I keep saying yes - even when I am overwhelmed to the point of panic

*  Sometimes I accept what isn't acceptable.  I say "It's fine," when it really isn't.

*  I have trouble asking for -or accepting- help.  I think I should be able to handle things on my own and I don't want to impose on others.

*  I'm burned out, stressed out, and overwhelmed.

*  Sometimes I feel like I'm being set up to fail.

*  Career plan?  Are you kidding?  Right now my plan is to get through this week.

See anything there that you recognize?  Then you definitely need to catch this show!  We'll be talking to Dondi Scumaci tonight at 8 PM Eastern on our SpouseBUZZ Radio show.  We'll also be taking call ins. And as usual, our chat room will be hopping!

We all know how our service-members rock their uniforms, right?  I mean, seriously.  Yum.  It's one of the definite perks of the lifestyle.

Well one former soldier is rockin' the catwalk on TV Land!  Tonight we're interviewing Raquel Riley, former Army Captain and current contestant on She's Got the Look.

In case you didn't click the link, here is Raquel - and WOW!

Raquel
Did I mention she also has three children?

Tonight we'll be talking to Raquel about her Army life, her time on the show, and getting some tips on how a military spouse can keep herself looking good and get ready for those moments when we want to do some seriously glam time (like homecomings!) despite our hectic and unpredictable schedules.

Listen to the show on SpouseBUZZ Livewire at 8 pm EST and join us in the chat room!  As always, we'll have a great time - you don't want to miss it!

Mental Health Demons and Spouses

|

In the military spouse world, we are very concerned about issues like PTSD and the mental health of our returning service-members, and we should be.  There is much there to be concerned about.

But what about the mental health of the military spouse?  What is it like to deal with mental health demons far from family while the love of your life is thousands of miles and a war zone away?  How do you cope?  How do you overcome?

Tonight on SpouseBUZZ Radio Livewire we'll be speaking to Holly, a military spouse who battled severe and debilitating mental health issues... and won.  With her husband deployed more often than he was home and two children, what challenges faced Holly in her mental health battle and how did she meet and defeat them?

You don't want to miss tonight's show, at 8 pm EST.  We will not be taking callers on this episode, but we will be taking questions for Holly in the comments and also in the chatroom.  We'll see you there!

Tonight: A Conversation With Lily Burana

|

A few months ago, I received an advance copy of Lily Burana's book, I Love a Man in Uniform. A little about the book:

An all-American love story about a former punk-rock stripper and her unlikely marriage to an officer in the U.S. Army.

In this brave, eloquent, and often funny memoir, critically acclaimed author Lily Burana writes about love, war, and the realities of military marriage with an honesty few writers would dare.

A former exotic dancer who once had a penchant for anarchist politics and purple hair dye, Lily's rebellious past never would have suggested a marriage into the military. But then she met Mike, a Military Intelligence officer, and fell hopelessly in love, resulting in a most unorthodox romance--poignant, passionate, and utterly unpredictable.

After Lily and Mike said "I do" in a brief pre-deployment City Hall ceremony, Mike left for Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Lily was left in a strange town to endure his absence alone, with no support system and little knowledge of the vast and confusing military world into which she had married.

I found Lily's book (and Lily) to be interesting, on so many levels. I'll be publishing a full review here at SpouseBUZZ soon.

Lily will join us this evening on LIVEWIRE to chat about her life and her book. I'm looking forward to talking with Lily, there's a lot of ground I want to cover, and I'm sure it's going to be a great show.

Listen live at 8:00 p.m. EST by clicking here. If you have a question for Lily, we'll open the phone lines and let you talk to her. The dial in number is 646.478.5665. Don't forget to join us in the chat room

Tonight on LIVEWIRE: A Journal for Jordan

|

Tonight on SBTR's LIVEWIRE, we'll speak with Dana Canedy about her book, A Journal for Jordan.

In 2005, First Sergeant Charles Monroe King began to write what would become a two-hundred-page journal for his son in case he did not make it home from the war in Iraq. Charles King, forty-eight, was killed on October 14, 2006, when an improvised explosive device detonated under his Humvee on an isolated road near Baghdad. His son, Jordan, was seven months old.

A Journal for Jordan is a mother’s letter to her son–fierce in its honesty–about the father he lost before he could even speak. It is also a father’s advice and prayers for the son he will never know.

An excerpt from the book:

And then there was the journal. Writing it would be a way for
your dad to help guide you through life if he did not make it home
to us. He wanted you to know to pick up the check on a date, to
take plenty of pictures on vacations, to have a strong work ethic,
and to pay your bills on time. He wanted to tell you how to deal
with disappointment, to understand the difference between love
and lust, to remember to get on your knees and pray every day.
Most of all, he wanted you to know how much he loved us.

So, late into the night in Iraq, after he had completed dangerous
and often deadly missions, your dad returned hungry and exhausted
to the relative calm of his room and wrote to you before he
slept. His grammar was not perfect and his handwriting at times
suggested that he was tired or rushed. But he put so much thought
into the beautiful messages he wrote, things like:

Be humble about your accomplishments, work harder
than the man next to you, it is all right for boys to cry.
Sometimes crying can release a lot of pain and stress.
Never be ashamed to cry. It has nothing to do with
your manhood.

Your father mailed the journal to me in July 2006, shortly after
one of his young soldiers was killed in an explosion eerily similar to
the one that would claim his own life. He was so shaken after
pulling the young man’s body, piece by piece, out of a bombed
tank that he sent the journal to me, unfinished. He had more to say,
but that would have to wait until he came home on a two- week
leave to meet you, six weeks before he died.

Dana's blog can be found here.

Our show begins at 8:00 p.m. EST. Click here to listen live. And don't forget to join us in the chat room.

Tomorrow on SBTR: The SpouseBUZZ Santa

|

Since we began hosting our SpouseBUZZ LIVE events in 2006, Sears has been right by our side, present at every event, armed with incredible prizes to give to the spouses in attendance. So far, they've donated thousands of dollars worth of merchandise. Things like appliances, top-of-the-line vacuum cleaners, wine chillers and gift cards for use in the BX/PX. Many a spouse has walked away with a great gift (or two) from Sears.

Sears has an outstanding reputation among the military community for looking after our troops and their families. The list is long. For a preview of Sears wide-ranging support for the military, you can tune into NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams tonight. NBC will feature a segment on Sears' support of our military.

Tomorrow, we will welcome Retired Command Sergeant Major and Sears National Account Manager, Howard Rathmann to SBTR to discuss Sears commitment to the military community. Some of you have had the pleasure of meeting Howard at our LIVE events. He's a wonderful guy, and Sears is a wonderful organization. We're very excited to have Howard join us tomorrow evening at 9:00 p.m. EST. Click here to listen live, and don't forget to join us in the chat room

Tonight on SpouseBUZZ Talk Radio:

|

Join us this evening, at 9:00 p.m. EST, as we speak with Mr. Ed Kringer, Director, Office of the Deputy Undersecretary of Defense, Military Community and Family Policy.  What does that mean?  That's why Ed is coming on our show!  Basically, his offices work in conjunction with state governments on issues that affect military families.

The department's website, USA4MilitaryFamilies.org, talks about their work and their ten key issues.  Check it out - it is very interesting!  I had no idea that the Department of Defense worked in this area to improve the lives of our military families, and I'm encouraged when I hear how much progress they've made.

Mr. Kringer will give a brief overview of the key issues, and we will be able to take calls if you have questions (or kudos, always welcome!)  Click here to listen to the show live (or later) and, as always, the chat room will be open.  Set an alarm, put a post-it on your fridge, or write a note on your hand.  It promises to be a very interesting show and I'm quite excited!

Tonight on SBTR: SpouseBUZZ LIVE San Antonio

Click here to listen live to the show and, as always, our chat room will be open. If you don't have an invitation to the chat room, but would like to join us, please send your request in before 8:00 p.m. Details here.

You know you want one!

Tonight on SpouseBUZZ Radio we'll talk to Joanna from Atta Girl!   It took a while, but I finally hinted enough to Air Force Guy and in July he presented me with my own Atta Girl bracelet!  It was quite the ceremony, and so sweet.  It is never far from my wrist.

So where did the idea for Atta Girls come from?  And what new ribbons can we expect to see in the future?  Joanna is even going to get some ideas from us for other Atta Girl awards!

Don't miss this show tonight at 9 PM Eastern on SpouseBUZZ Radio!  And as always, our chat room will be hopping!

Tonight on SpouseBUZZ Radio!

We live in interesting times, that's for sure.

What does the current economic crisis mean for military families?  With so much emphasis on the housing sector and the fact that we have to move and don't have a choice - how can we best position ourselves during this crisis?

For the first half of today's show we'll be talking to our favorite Real Estate agents - Larry and Madeline of LarMad Homes.  Larry will have tips and facts on the search for housing in today's market.  Very important to know!  We previously talked to Larry and Madeline here, and it was a great conversation.  Madeline also runs a blog called Just Ask Madeline, and we all LOVE blogs!

In the second half of the show we'll be speaking to USAA mortgage specialists about how the current market crisis affects your mortgage or your ability to get one.  With all the talk of a credit crunch, this is stuff you really need to know!

Join us tonight at 9 PM Eastern on SpouseBUZZ Radio for a very timely show!  As always, our phone lines will be open for questions and our chat room will be hopping.

Tonight on SpouseBUZZ Radio!

Tonight SpouseBUZZ Radio has a very special program!  We'll be speaking to Christina Thoreson - The Federal Programs Marketing Manager at Microsoft.

Yes, THAT Microsoft

For the second year in a row, Microsoft has partnered with the USO and has rented out Radio City Music Hall to provide a big show, free of charge! - to service-members and their families.  Now that is a big deal!

Let's talk about it!

We'll also be joined by fellow military spouse Lori Twichell of Beyond the Buzz Marketing to talk about the Microsoft program.

You don't want to miss it, tonight at 9 pm Eastern on SpouseBUZZ Radio!  And don't forget - the chat room will be hopping!

Tonight on SpouseBUZZ Radio!

Thousands of military families are choosing the homeschooling option.  My family did - it makes those moves easier, since we don't have to worry about schooling being interrupted.  We work on our schedule, we have time off when we need it, and we have some flexibility for those uniquely military challenges (like when Dad comes home from deployment mid-year!).

It's not a walk in the park, though, it's a lot of work and it can be very frustrating.  I do miss having the day to myself sometimes.  And the paperwork is CRAZY.

Is homeschooling for you?  Tonight we'll be joined by a special co-host and homeschooler, our own ArmyReserveWife!  We'll be hosting Chris Klicka, of the Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA) and talking about the issues facing military homeschoolers today.  What and where is it legal?  How do we know what the rules are when we move?  All that and more tonight at 9 pm Eastern on SpouseBUZZ Radio

And don't forget to join us in the chatroom!

SpouseBUZZ Radio Special Event

|

Today I don't talk much, but I still know what day it is.  I think a lot.  I remember what life was like on 9-10-2001 and how Air Force Guy and I planned to be totally done with the military and move back to California for some sweet civilian job making oodles of money.  I remember how it only took one day, 24 hours, for it all to change.

Today on SpouseBUZZ Radio we will be featuring two very special stories.  We will talk to LTC Phil Waite about the dedication of the Pentagon 9-11 Memorial taking place today.

We will also talk to Soldier Hard, a To the Fallen Records artist who decided after 9-11that even though he had already done his military time, he needed to re-enlist to be with his military family.  We'll be playing Soldier Hard's song "The Military Wife" for you to listen to.

We'll be accepting call ins and talking, and of course we'll be in the chat room,  about that day - 9/11/2001 - when the world changed for all Americans, and especially for military families.

You don't want to miss this show tonight at 9 pm Eastern on SpouseBUZZ Radio.

SpouseBUZZ Radio

|

We will be skipping tonight's radio show because of technical issues and the fact that a big ol' crowd of SpouseBUZZ peeps are headed to SB Live in Hampton Roads

You simply MUST tune in next Thursday at 9 pm Eastern, though, when we we not only be doing a 9/11 Memorial Show featuring Soldier Hard, a To the Fallen Records artist that chose to get back into the military after 9/11 - we'll also be featuring a new tune.

Soldier Hard as a great song called The Military Wife, which is available for free download on his My Space page.  We'll also be playing it during the show.  You don't want to miss this one.  We'll be doing what military wives do best when they get together - laughing, crying, remembering, and supporting each other.  With Thursday being the anniversary of 9/11, we just may need those few moments together.

In the meantime, go listen to The Military Wife before the show.  It's a tear-jerker and a heart sweller and something I think we all need to hear.

SpouseBUZZ Radio Needs Your Help!

|

Our next two shows are audience shows!

This Thursday we will be discussing SpouseBUZZ Live events.  Have you been to one?  We need you to call in and chat with us!

Next Thursday is a solemn anniversary - next Thursday is 9/11.  Do you know someone who joined as a result of 9/11?  Did you?  We want to talk to you, and we really want to hear from you.  Drop me an email, so we can feature your story!

Tonight on SBTR: Military Music

|

Tonight we're going to catch up with our old friends at To The Fallen Records. We'll find out what they've been up to since our last show, and we'll also meet a new artist, Zach Johnson. Zach's myspace page can be found here. Be sure to listen to Zach's song, "We'll be Together," a song that he wrote as a love letter to his wife while he was deployed.

Join us tonight at 9:00 EDT by clicking here. As always, the chat room will open.

BREAKING NEWS: Apparently, General's Wives Are Not Aliens...

|

Last fall, I was at a post-wide gathering when I noticed the CG's wife wandering around the large banquet room. I also noticed that everyone was staying away from her, including me. She's a fantastic lady, but after all, she's the General's wife, and who really wants to take a chance on saying or doing the wrong thing, right?

I watched her for a good while because I found my observations fascinating. She was the one approaching table after table and initiating conversation. In 20 minutes or so, I never saw anyone approach her. And then I thought, wow, that must be hard. What if someone threw you in a room with 300 people and you were responsible for all the introductions and conversation? Some of us would be just fine, but I'll bet most of us would hate it and feel uncomfortable. I'd be thinking, "sheesh, would someone please tell a good joke or do something a little bit improper? I need an icebreaker here..."

The Amazing Elaine: An Encore Appearance

|

Oh boy, do we have a special treat for you tonight. If you missed our show several months ago with Elaine, a Vietnam-era milspouse, you missed out! Elaine was such a big hit with our audience that we've asked her back, and she's agreed.

If you're feeling down and having a particularly tough deployment, you certainly don't want to miss this show because when you hear Elaine's story, it's sure to give you a boost. It's hard to believe what the spouses of those who served in the Vietnam war had to endure. And it's really nice that we're able to give them a platform to talk about their experiences, something that they didn't really have back then.

Don't miss this show, and don't miss our always-lively chat, either. By the way, our chat room was down yesterday during our show with Mrs. Chiarelli. Sorry for the inconvenience. It appears to be working fine today, though.

Click here at 9:00 p.m. EDT to listen live.

The Army Family Action Plan Turns 25: A SBTR Special Edition

|

You may or may not have heard of The Army Family Action Plan (AFAP), but if you haven't, chances are you are familiar with many of the programs and benefits that have been instituted under the umbrella of AFAP. Things like Army Family Team Building, BOSS, the increase in SGLI and BAH throughout the years, and on and on. AFAP allows soldiers and family members to give direct input to commanders and Army leaders on what is working, what isn't working and issues which need to be addressed. Basically, AFAP exists to improve the lives of Army families.

AFAP will celebrate its 25th anniversary on August 15. Today at 3:00 EDT, we'll host a a special 30-minute edition of SpouseBUZZ Talk Radio, which will be devoted to AFAP. We'll look at what AFAP has accomplished over the years and how it can continue to serve Army families in the years ahead. We're thrilled to welcome Beth Chiarelli as our guest today. Mrs. Chiarelli is the wife of General Peter W. Chiarelli, the new Vice Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army.

Click here at 3:00 to listen live. I'll also open the chat room.

Tonight on SBTR: Reintegration

|

Tonight on SpouseBUZZ Talk Radio, we're going to have a very candid conversation about reintegration. Reintegration can be a huge challenge for military families, as many of you know.

Until we received this email from a soldier, I rarely thought about reintegration from my husband's perspective, only mine. What will make tonight's show extra-special is that not only will a milspouse be our guest, but her husband has agreed to come on, too. Brave guy.... Butterfly Wife and her husband, code-named Jack Bauer, have recently went through the reintegration process. In fact, they may still be going through it. We'll find out tonight.

Tune in at 9:00 p.m. EDT by clicking here. Don't forget to join us in the chat room, too.

See our reintegration index here.

Tonight on SpouseBUZZ Radio!

|

Tonight on SpouseBUZZ Radio we've got a very timely show you won't want to miss - because it's all about your home.  The housing market stinks right now, but that doesn't slow down the PCS cycle.  Should we buy?  Sell?  Rent?  And if we have to sell, how best to make our house stand out in this market?

We're going to have Larry Whitehead, of LarMad Homes, on this evening to give us the scoop so we can go into our next PCS armed with lots of facts and knowledge to come out of this market on top.

You may remember that I sang Larry's praises before, when we moved to the DC area.  Now you can talk to him, too.  Write your questions down so you don't forget and be sure to call them in!

Don't forget, SpouseBUZZ Radio at 9 pm Eastern tonight!  And as always, our chat room will be hopping.

Tonight we're featuring a wonderful show!  What if some proud Americans got together and decided to give people a platform to showcase just how much the troops (and military family members!) mean to them?  What if all it took was uploading your video to an easily available website?

And what if you were that service-member, deployed and lonely, who could log onto this site and watch person after person expressing just how much you mean to them and how grateful they are?

Tomorrow, on the Fourth of July, Moment of Thanks will launch.  As of right now, you can view a message from Tommy Lasorda, with his thanks and pride for the Armed Services.  In the days to follow, more celebrities and everyday Americans will be contributing their messages of thanks for all to see.

Sometimes, just hearing Thank You means so much.

Join us tonight on SpouseBUZZ Radio at 9 pm Eastern as we preview Moment of Thanks and discuss what brought this incredible concept about. As always, the chat room will be hopping.  You don't want to miss this.

Soldier's Angels is a wonderful organization, devoted to helping service-members and their families.  I have had the privilege of adopting several deployed service-members through them, and it has been a tremendously rewarding experience.

Join us tonight as we talk in depth about Soldier's Angels with Patti and what it was like to be crowned by Donny and Marie Osmond.

Tonight on SBTR: Katherine Fugate of Army Wives

|

In just three days, the season premiere of Army Wives will debut. Tonight, we're thrilled to welcome Katherine Fugate, creator and executive producer of Army Wives, back to SpouseBUZZ Talk Radio. Join us at 9:00 p.m. Eastern tonight by clicking here.

The Army Wives season one finale left us with a real cliff hanger, which is why I was surprised that the previews offered so much information. If you read this post and watched the videos posted, you now know a couple of things. We know who the bomber was, and we know that someone dies.

We had a great time talking with Katherine a few weeks ago. Katherine was a fabulous guest. She made clear that she loves talking to "real" military spouses, so get your questions ready and phone them in to Katherine. Lifetime television has donated some DVD sets of the first season of Army Wives to SpouseBUZZ. The first few callers tonight will win an Army Wives prize package. Not too shabby...

If you're an Army Wives fan, you won't want to miss tonight's show! Our chat room was hopping the last time we had Katherine on, so be sure to join us in the chat room tonight. If you don't have your chat room invitation, be sure to get one before 7:30 this evening. See you tonight!

Grace and candor....

|

Some people can go through trials and tribulations, and do it with such grace and candor, I am left amazed and humbled.

Tonight on SpouseBuzz Talk Radio we spoke with Reid Stanley who authors the blog A Storm in Afghanistan.  Reid  is an active duty soldier, who lost his wife to cancer 408 days ago.  He shared his family's story through illness, treatment, death, funeral, and grief.......If you have a moment, please listen to the program, Reid really is a no nonsense and open with his care, and love for his wife.  Please listen to the show.

Reid, is currently involved in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer

I'd like to announce that I've decided to partake in the Avon - Walk for Breast Cancer.

The walk will be 26.2 miles long, or more recognizable as the length of a marathon. I think that's significant as battling cancer is often best thought in terms of a marathon - it's a long race.

I'll be walking in Washington, DC - where Ellicia found special memories on our last trip. And significantly, it's the weekend of her birthday - she would have been 41.

Avon's foundation requires a commitment to ensure the successful goal of the walkers.  Each walker must make a commitment of a minimum of $1800 in contributions.

I am asking for YOUR help. I'd like to blow past that goal, personally. Breast cancer, like so many cancers, is a horrible disease. We need to keep funding the research to DEFEAT this disease - before it claims too many more of our mothers, wives, daughters, sisters... and little known fact, the men in our society, too.

Please, go to my Avon website where you can donate directly.

If that doesn't work, then you can also click the button below, and those donations will go 100% to the walk.

Thank you for your support.  It'll be a long, hard walk... but, as Ellicia taught me, anything is possible.

Tonight on SpouseBUZZ Radio!!

Join Guard Wife and I tonight at 9 EST at  SpouseBuzz Talk Radio!

Top of the 9pm hour, we will be joined by fellow military Spouse Tiffany Booher, who authored the book Spouses Also Serve.  We will be discussing her book, and we will also be discussing how one becomes published, the process of writing, and how her idea came to fruition.

The second half of the show, Reid Stanley will join us.   Reid is not only a member of the armed services, but is a fellow blogger.  He is joining us to discuss the Avon walk for cancer for his wife Ellicia, who passed  away 408 days ago, after a long battle with breast cancer.  Reid now finds himself in an unusual position at such a young age, as a single working parent, and widow.  I have a lot of questions for Reid, as I have been a reader of his blog for quite some time...

Join us.

Mark your calendars! First, for you Ft. Hood spouses, you may already know about the "Salute to our Heroes" event that will take place at Ft. Hood on April 11. The event is not open to the general public, only "Military and Family members, retirees, Gold Star Families, DOD civilians and contractors are invited to attend for free. More than 80,000 Soldiers, Family members and DOD civilians are expected to attend." Those of us not in the Ft. Hood area can watch the event courtesy of our friends at SyncLive, who will broadcast the event worldwide.

We'll get a behind the scenes look at the event this Thursday, when we talk with celebrity rock personality Metal Sanaz (a busy lady these days) and SyncLive CEO Aric Berquist on SBTR. Tune in at 9:00 p.m. EST by clicking here.

And for tonight....JP Borda, a good friend of SpouseBUZZ and a fellow blogger, will be one of the soldiers featured in a PBS Frontline documentary tonight. The film is called Bad Voodoo's War and was directed by another friend of SpouseBUZZ, filmmaker Deborah Scranton. I admire Deborah's work because she allows the soldiers to tell their own stories without editorial interference. I wrote a review of her first film, The War Tapes. Based on that experience, I expect great things out of tonight's film. Click here to check your local listings and find out when the film will air in your area. A preview after the jump:
