Click and Connect: Find a Battle Buddy

|

SpouseBUZZ is all about connecting with one another and sharing our collective "married to the military" experiences. We've updated the long list of milspouse bloggers that we've managed to gather from previous posts. Plus, additional links that you've sent our way have been added. You may find that there are some spouse blogs you can relate to more than others, so browse the links and try to find a battle buddy (or twenty). Sit back, click and connect.

And a reminder, this fall will bring three opportunities to connect live and in person with hundreds of other milspouses.

Norfolk - September 6

San Antonio - October 18

Seattle/Tacoma - November 15

Click "continue reading" for the list of milspouse bloggers (in no particular order). If we've missed a blog that should be added to the list, please list it in the comment section and I'll add the link to this post.

Warm up your #2 pencil

|

Okay, okay, I suppose there are a few of you out there who may have never used a #2 pencil ... or even know that wood was formerly used to encase the lead ... in the times before mechanical pencils... but like the Toad does at times ... he digresses ...

This past Friday (25 Apr 08) the Air Force announced their 2008 Community Assessment Survey and this year they have decided to go all out to get feedback FROM SPOUSES!  So, those of you who have Air Force Blue in your closets, get ready to crash the servers!, er, I mean, get ready to log on and fire-away with your thoughts.  They haven't given any previews that I know of, so I'm out on the limb in recommending this to you ... but, even if the questions seem to be bogus you should be able to get your point(s) across somehow, someway ... so, let's give it a shot.

It opens up tomorrow (28 Apr 08, presuming the creek don't rise) at this site AF Community Assessment and the password is (shhh -- it may be public knowledge, but who knows who's listening) SpouseAFCA

Here's a bit more from the press release ....

Summer is coming... what do I do with the kids?!?!

|

If you are a parent and your spouse is deployed, please read this and follow the links.  I was perusing through the Operation Homefront website and came across a great page that gives tips and insight to the inevitable "What do I do with the kids over the summer while my hubby/wife is deployed?  AHHHHH!!!!"

Have no fear.  Click on this link and read the article about various camps and activities for your children this summer.  This includes Guard and Reserve families as well.  And spread the word to your friends if they have kids and their spouse is deployed.  Maybe, just maybe, it will make the summer a bit easier!

For you Guard spouses, he touched on topics of concern to you as well. You can listen to the audio by clicking here. It's worth your time to listen in, you will hear some information towards the end that I believe will be new and relevant to most of you.

Being A New Military Spouse or Family Member

Military OneSource has a wonderful resource guide available for new Army Spouses and Family Members.

While the guide is directed specifically at Army type programs and information, a great deal of the included information will also be of benefit to spouses or family members from other branches of service.

*Military OneSource requires that you login on their site in order to access information, so direct links do not work.  You will need to login and search 'spouse guide' in order to find the guide titled "A First Guide for Army Spouses and Family Members."

My Army Life, too.

|

Okay, so I'm not Army.  Which is probably why I didn't know about this website, www.myarmylifetoo.com

I went to this website to learn more about Army Family Team Building (AFTB), which are a series of classes that teach subjects of interest to military members and their families, beginning with basics such as Basic Military Benefits and Entitlements, or Military Acronyms and Terms, and moving through to more complex topics such as Family Readiness Groups and the Deployment Cycle.

What I found was much more:

New Squadron Commander's spouse

|

I have a lovely friend here.  Her husband is deploying today.  She will be moving this summer, by herself, to their next duty station.  When she gets there, she'll be a squadron commanders spouse for the first time.  She's a quiet person, very unassuming, very loving and absolutely endearing!

She's understandably nervous about how to best handle the situation she's inheriting.  She wants to be supportive for the other spouses and knows this will entail supporting spouses through deployments and all that comes with it.  So, I thought I'd turn to y'all for advise to give.  After reading Air Force Wife's post about suggestions, I do so with some trepidation!  But, y'all are military and who is better equipped to give this sort of advise?!?!?!?

So, if you have any helpful hints, words of wisdom, do or die suggestions, absolutely don't do's, etc. - please pass them on!  I'm sure she'll take all of it to heart!

Check the Box

|

Many of us are residents of one state but live in another. Many of us live overseas. Many of us have deployed spouses. This means that we have to do a little extra legwork when it comes to voting. Something to consider:

More than 200,000 absentee ballots were mailed by Service members and their families, DoD Civilians, and US Embassy employees across the world as part of the 2004 Presidential Election according to Allison Lovelady, MPSA’s Voting Representative.  With this figure in mind and considering it is a Presidential election year, every vote counts especially from those who are deployed and sacrifice everyday for the fundamental right to decide this nation’s future.

We don't touch politics around here, but we certainly want to pass along information that may be helpful to you or your spouse with respect to making sure your vote is registered. Click here for links, videos and other sources of information about voting options.

After the jump, I'm pasting a press release from the U.S. Army's Human Resource Command regarding absentee voting.

Thinking Outside the Box: Military Spouses for Creative Solutions

|

Over the past few days, as a result of the recent USA Today article, our collective heads have been swirling with thought. Emails between the SpouseBUZZ crew have been flying back and forth. And I do mean flying. You offered your suggestions, too. We don't all agree on the right approach, but I thank each of you for taking the time to weigh in, and for a brutally honest and thought-provoking discussion.

Family support issues are complex. They cut across rank, branch and geography. Peacetime and wartime. We discuss family support all the time, but in a piece mill fashion. It's difficult to get your arms around family support when you think of it as a giant block, which is what I attempted to do a few days ago. I asked some open-ended questions of you, and you answered appropriately. For now, let's take one fragment at a time. The intent of this post is to focus on areas which we have the power to influence and improve. We're "drilling down," so to speak.

Grab a cup of coffee. Here goes:

Free Money!

|

Did I get your attention? Good.

We all know how difficult it can be to go to college. More difficult when you are a military spouse. Money can be tight. Logistics (when do they offer classes? who will watch the kids? when will I have time to study?) can be difficult to navigate.

Sending a child to college isn't much easier. The logistics aren't as big of a deal but the money still is.

Now comes the "free money" part.

3 Doors Down Celebrate the Citizen Soldier

The music of 3 Doors Down made me cry more than once when my husband was deployed.  They have a great sound and if you haven't checked them out before, I recommend you do!

I recently received a link to a video being featured on the Go Guard! website which allows you to watch a video prepared by 3 Doors Down as a tribute to the National Guard soldier.  It's a great mini-movie backed by a fantastic track from 3 Doors Down.

Enjoy!

Prioritize the List: What Are Your Needs?

Have you heard of the Army Family Covenant? It was signed a few days ago by General Casey.

"It was immediately clear to us that the Families were the most stretched, and as a result, the most stressed, part of the force, and that what we were asking those families was a quantum different than anything I expected we would ask," Gen. Casey said.

"It struck me that the best wasn't good enough. We have not, until this point, treated Families as the readiness issue that they are," he said last week when he announced the covenant during the Association of the United States Army Annual Meeting.

Gen. Casey said the Army wants to provide Soldiers and their Families with a level of support commensurate with their level of service, and the covenant is in direct response to concerns from Army Families. They are concerned about funding and support for Family programs, physical and mental healthcare, housing, education and childcare and employment opportunities for spouses.

In 2008, approximately 1.4 billion dollars has been pledged to help support those of us on the homefront. How will this money to be spent?

Faith on the Homefront

|

We're close to receiving our 10,000th comment here at SpouseBUZZ. If you look back through some of the posts, you'll notice that many spouses have commented that faith has been one of their most powerful coping mechanisms, especially during a deployment.

Patti Katter sent me a link a few weeks ago to a forum for Christian military wives. Someone else sent me a link to a site for Active Duty Missionaries and don't forget about Finding Hope Beyond the Battle.

Be a Coupon Queen: It Pays...

|

In the post below, AFWife_Niki mentioned that she went into two NY&C stores and the sales clerks were unaware of the 15% military discount.

New York & Company is one of my absolute favorite stores. Anytime I go into a mall with an NY&Co, it's usually my first stop. Well after reading the post you wrote about the store last year, I went to two NY&Co's back home in NJ and asked if they had a military discount. Both times the cashiers looked at me like I was crazy and asked what that was. I guess only NY&Co's near military installations offer discounts. It makes me sad but I'll still shop there! There isn't a NY&Co near my base though.

This probably happens all the time given turnover of employees and other factors. My advice to Niki was to press them on it if you know it's a stated, nationwide policy which, in this case, it is.

But, there's something else you can do. Go armed with a coupon.

More coupons here. Bookmark the link and scan it before you go shopping. You never know what you might find.

We Were Significant Others Once, Too

|

Although SpouseBUZZ is a place for military spouses, not all of our readers are military spouses. "Significant others" also lurk, read and comment here, and we're happy to have you. After all, before we became military spouses, we were significant others. I would have paid a fair amount of money to have had a resource like SpouseBUZZ available to me before I married into the Army. It probably would have helped me understand the culture a bit better, and avoid some of the more embarrassing situations I found myself in.

Several months ago, I wrote a post asking significant others to say hello. I've noticed that since then, many have kept coming back to that post and connecting with one another, which I think is great. One comment really grabbed me.

Already after 4 weeks I realize that I'm going to have times like this evening, melt downs because I feel lonely and scared most of all, because I haven't heard anything.

Reading through these posts I realize that I'm not alone, that there are others that are going through the same.

****

Most of all, I think I just needed to "vent", but I want all of you that share this situation with me to know, that I'm thinking of you, as well.

I will check back and read posts and post! Keep your heads up, everyone, and hang in there.

One of the main reasons SpouseBUZZ exists. For girlfriends or boyfriends who have found us recently, I thought I would open a fresh thread for you. Say hello to us, let us know who you are and how we can better support you.

Seeking Help

|

Over the past few weeks, the SpouseBUZZ team has been inundated with requests from milspouses seeking help and advice on everything from financial matters to child custody matters to marital problems. While we are sympathetic to everyone's plight, whatever it may be, we are not professionally trained to deal with these complex issues, and we certainly can't dispense legal advice.

What we do in situations like those mentioned above, is to point milspouses in the right direction. We turn them over to someone who has the means, know-how, experience, training and resources to help. Ninety-nine percent of the time, that means that we recommend Military OneSource. Military OneSource offers free, confidential counseling and they are available 24/7. Their motto is: "You Name it, We Can Help." I can't stress enough how helpful this resource is for military families. If you need it, use it. Military OneSource is there for you, no matter how large or small you think your problem is.

If you do anything today, bookmark this link and write down this number: 1-800-342-9647. Keep it with you at all times, you never know when you may need it.

Over the weekend, I published a post about The Army Integrated Family Support Network, a brand new program developed by the Army, "to provide assistance to Soldiers and their Families in geographically dispersed areas." Many of you had questions about this program. On Monday I spoke to someone with the Army Public Affairs Office about the program. We'll be having an official spokesperson from the Army MWR office on SpouseBUZZ Talk Radio soon to discuss this program in detail. I'll alert you as to when, but if you have any questions about the program, leave them in the comment section and I'll be sure to ask your question.

Finally, we receive suggestions and comments about how we can improve this site for you fairly frequently. Given that we just celebrated our first birthday, I thought it might be a good time to put out a general call for feedback regarding SpouseBUZZ. Tell us what we're doing right, what we're doing wrong and what we aren't doing that you would like to see us do. This site exists because of you and we value your input. Don't be shy about making suggestions, we're open to all of them. We can't always implement every suggestion, but when we can, we certainly do.

SpouseBUZZ Blog Series, Part III: Privacy Concerns

|

So now you have a blog and want to write about your deployment or your day-to-day life in the military.  What should you be concerned about in the very public world of milblogging?

Most spouses I know are highly invested in maintaining OPSEC, or operational security.  And generally I think most milbloggers do a good job of flying under the radar because, as DJ Elliot astutely said, "they are the ones most personally affected by the results of a violation."  No blogger wants to do anything to injure his or her spouse, ever.  Many wives I know won't say anything about where their husbands are, even to me!  They take it very seriously and keep all references to unit affiliation, duty station, or sector downrange out of their posts.

But what else do you need to think about?

Just how do you capture a concept?

|

A net won't work in the material world. A firewall won't work in the cyber world. Or maybe it's that a really good concept or idea, is something that comes into your mind at a time and in a place, where remarkable things are just waiting to happen. Where quiet discussions full of apprehension happen and then, with a deep breath and the push of a key, we understand that capturing this concept is best done by turning it loose on the world.

One year ago, a concept was unleashed that was destined to burn through the minds of hundreds and hundreds of people. It would ignite in many of us, and re-ignite in many more, a passion for the one thing that we had in common, creating a place where we could "celebrate and embrace the tie that binds us all -- military service."

SpouseBUZZ. The goal was to be your "virtual family support group where we could instantly connect" to one another to discuss our problems and laugh at our goofs. And where we at times, could only sit and stare at the words on the monitor -- and ever so carefully move our hands to the keyboard to type some very important words, "I'm here--let's talk."

By way of reintroduction, in the hood of SpouseBUZZ I have a particularly interesting seat. My dad was a career NCO, and he pushed me to college. I was commissioned three years post-Viet Nam and led an active duty life all the way to the borders of Afghanistan ... and then some. Through this, my wife, also an active duty officer walked with me a balance beam of mutual support that continues to this day. Maybe you're seeing why my seat is particularly interesting: #1- I'm a guy. Followed closely by, I'm a retired officer with 26 years of active duty, with almost 600 days of combat (a drop in the bucket these days), and a statistic that is exceptionally personal -- 5 handwritten letters to those we honor as Gold Star Mothers. I chose to retire, because my wife needed my full and undivided support, so now my place is by her side, her Wingman, if you understand the concept. And SpouseBUZZ is my home.

Ask and Ye Shall Receive

|

Some of you in the chat room and via email have been asking for SpouseBUZZ flyers to distribute to your FRGs, ACS offices, etc.. Well, ask and ye shall receive. I should have the flyers up for you to download later today, or early tomorrow. You can then email the flyers, post them on your virtual FRG boards copy, print and distribute at your military installation. Military.com designed some super-nice, glossy 1/3 pagers too, so if you prefer those, we can have them sent to your military installation, just let us know and we'll provide them.

We appreciate you spreading the word about SpouseBUZZ. We're always thrilled when we find we've been listed as a spouse resource on websites or in post/base resource packets, and we have YOU to thank for that. Word of mouth is our best form of advertisement and we want to say thanks to all of you who have helped spread the word about SpouseBUZZ. We are truly humbled by your commitment to what we do here, and by your contributions to the discussion in our comment section. We have learned -- and continue to learn -- so much from you.

I also want to mention that there is no SpouseBUZZ Pajama Party tonight. Remember that we said we would schedule two of them this month just to test the waters. We held one last Sunday, and the next one is scheduled for next Sunday, the 23rd. I have to say though, if the next one is as successful as the first one, we'll definitely be doing these each week, complete with a mystery guest, just like we had last week. The new chat room was on fire last week, what a party that was! Plus, everyone enjoyed our special mystery guest. Thursdays will deal with serious topics, and Sundays are all about fun. If you missed Thursday's show on reintegration hosted by AWTM and Guard Wife, click here to listen. It was very interesting.

So, no radio show this evening, but if you want to meet in the chat room tonight at 9:00, we can still do that.

Will you be shipping packages overseas for the holidays?
