3 Ways to Celebrate the First Day of Summer

FacebookXPinterestEmailEmailEmailShare

Over here we’ve been celebrating summer since it’s unofficial start Memorial Day weekend. To us summer is already one-third over.

But the season doesn’t actually officially start until June 21 “summer solstice” -- the longest day of the year. It's time to kick the fun up a notch.

Since  the first day of summer is also a Friday night this year, I figure it’s a perfect time to think up a few great things to do around your military base in celebration. Here are some ideas.

1. Make your way to tickets and travel. Almost every base has a tickets and travel office -- and most of them offer discounted tickets to attractions in your area. The first day of summer is a great chance to hit up a local concert or spend part of the day at a local amusement park. Check out this great guide from ArmyWife101 on using your local tickets office.

2. Head to the closest city. I know some of you read that line and thought “WHAT city?” But there are many of you out there stationed just an hour or two from a big city of some kind. This would be the perfect time to pack up the kids, drive down and have a picnic dinner in a city park. When you’re done, go for a walk around whatever that city is famous for (China Town? Music Row? The Corn Palace?) Do a little research before you head that direction to find out what the best local dessert place is, and hit that up as the evening winds down.

3. Do the local tourist thing you’ve been putting off. Oh, I know there’s something, even in the smallest of towns, that you’ve been meaning to do with your spouse or kids and just haven’t quite gotten around to. But hey! It’s the first day of summer. Seize the day and do it now. Is there a tiny local museum you’ve been meaning to visit? A dive diner you’ve been meaning to try? A park you think looks fun but you always just drive by instead of stopping? Be intentional and give it a try. What’s the worst that can happen?
