My Husband, the "Badass"

When it comes to military life, and particularly huge stories like the death of Osama Bin Laden, my civilian friends are infinitely inquisitive. They want to get the "inside story" and they assume I have it. The problem, of course, is that I don't. And neither does my husband. But if he did, he wouldn't be sharing a single detail with me, or with them.

Nobody likes to get a call at midnight because that usually means bad news, but on Sunday evening and early Monday morning, there was no doubt why my phone was ringing. The callers were friends and family elated over the news that America's number one enemy had been eliminated by members of the world's fiercest fighting force.

One of my friends wanted to know if my husband was involved. No, I answered. I was out of town and he was home and slept through my text message and the entire story, not finding out about it until the next morning.

Another asked if my husband knew about the raid before the world did. Um, no....

Another has seen my husband's Ranger tab on his uniform and asked me yesterday if Rangers are more "badass" than the Navy Seals. Ha. How to explain the complexities of being a Ranger but not being in a Ranger BN, etc. to a civilian? I wasn't sure how to answer that one, but I did say, "Rangers Lead the Way." Which I think only confused the issue....

Sometimes we laugh at the things civilians say, even though we know they mean well. In this case, though the questions were funny, I was happy to take them. Everyone was beaming with pride upon learning of the flawless execution of the mission by members of  SEAL Team Six that secretive team which doesn't exist. Everyone was in awe of our military. They were grateful that we have men and women who are willing to put their lives on the line to keep America safe. And they wanted to feel connected to the story somehow. They did that by reaching out to military families they knew and thanking them and talking to them about what had happened.

Military Spouse Appreciation Day is right around the corner. Not that I need or look for it, but I am feeling appreciated right now. And more important to me, my husband and your spouse are getting a second look by a lot of people. Although it may be temporary, this story seems to have revived interest in our Armed Forces, and that's never a bad thing.

Plus, I can't complain that all my civilian friends think I'm married to a "Badass."
