Will You Be My Friend?

As some of you know, we PCS’ed to Fort Jackson a few months ago.  Ever since then, I’ve been on the hunt for friends.  No stone has been left unturned!  I’ve tried various strategies for finding friends – everything from attending various events to begging my husband to drag home some of his married classmates.

However, I’ve started to realize that finding new friends is like dating.  Does anyone else feel that finding new friends after PCSing is like being thrown back in the deep end of the dating pool?

I was surprised earlier this week when a fellow spouse I met a few months ago, and befriended on Facebook, sent me a message asking me to coffee.  When I received her message, it was all I could do not to jump up and down with excitement!  I had secretly hoped that maybe someday she would contact me to do something like coffee so that we could expand our friendship.  But, I played it cool.  Even though I received her Facebook message the moment she sent it, I waited a bit to respond.  I didn’t want to appear desperate.

After we had coffee this morning, I found myself examining every word, tone, and gesture that occurred during our time together.  As I was replaying our entire coffee date, something dawned on me.  Oh. My. Goodness! This whole friendship thing is like dating!  No, seriously, think about it!  When is the last time you analyzed your entire conversation, wondered how much time should elapse before you return a phone call, or waited to hear from someone?  It was when you were dating!

I had a friend point out to me I probably need to stop trying so hard.  She made the observations that all of my good friends are women I met when I wasn’t really hunting for friends.  While this is true, isn’t that concept also a dating principle?  See, it’s just one more reason finding friends after you PCS is like dating!

Do you feel finding new friends is like dating?  After you PCS, how do you find new friends?
