Deployment Dilemma

FacebookXPinterestEmailEmailEmailShare

If we milspouses could choose whether or not our spouse would deploy, we would most certainly choose NOT DEPLOY!!! Right?

But what if your spouse wants to deploy and the Army says he has to stay on Rear D?

This is a mental and emotional dilemma for us...

If you have been reading this blog for some time, then you know my husband was wounded in 2005. When we arrived at our current duty station a few months ago, we knew he would be deployed by the end of this year. I was not thrilled, of course, but DH is ready to "get back in the fight." And I understand why he is so eager to deploy again.

Recently he has had some health issues (nothing life threatening, thank goodness) and has been to the doctor for various reasons. He was told 2 weeks ago that he wouldn't deploy and he was MAD, MAD, MAD!!! I didn't know what to tell him when he told me this - I could hear the sadness and frustration in his voice on the phone.

He has worked so hard to get well again and "fit for duty," then the news comes down on him like a ton of bricks. A part of me does not want him to deploy again, especially after being wounded last time he was there. But the other part of me knows how important it is for him to deploy. Plus he would get a chance to go back to where he was wounded and have some closure. Going back to where he was wounded is also very important to him - and to me. I think it would be a healing experience for him.

But, as the Army goes, he could end up deploying with his unit anyway, or later (after his medical issues are resolved). Strangely enough, I want him to go back at some point in time so he can have some closure and feel like all of his hard work to heal was "worth it."

Have any of you ever experienced something like this?
