What is My Zip Code?
May 30, 2009|
Things are pretty quiet here on SpouseBUZZ, as most of the authors are travelling this week for SpouseBUZZ Live. I had an interesting thought during my trip, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who has had this experience. When I went to the airport, I thought I should put my frequent flyer number on my ticket so that I can get credit for these flights. I know that there are ways for the airline people to find my number. Unfortunately, it usually involves providing the address at which I lived when I last used that account.
Seriously? I'm like, "Could you give me a clue?" Maybe just the first digit? Because I don't know what zip code I might have used. Heck, I can barely remember some of them. You know, the blue house? With the toilet that always overflowed? Where was that?
As I told the people here at SpouseBUZZ Live today, it helps to make a list. If you start when you first get married, so you have some chance of remembering where you've been so far. Make a couple of copies - send one to your parents and one to your best friend. It won't help you at the airport, but it will help when you apply for some job that requires you to list every place that you've lived for the last 10 years.

Something else that is helpful is to keep a copy of your free annual credit report. Those list your addresses from waaaay back. I've had to reference it a time or two for address information. :)

I have a list with full address and country in my address book along with every school my kids have attended along with every job I had. :) Who knew it would be a BIG help.

Kate, it was great to meet you today at SpouseBuzz! It's been a while since I've seen any Navy "sisters!"
We put one address label from each duty station on our Very Important Papers file and keep a power bill from each house.

I keep this stuff in my cell phone so I know I will always have it. I can NEVER remember the zip for where we live. Although people look at me funny when I can't answer them without checking my phone first.

I kill cell phones and when you move overseas, you have to get a new one. Plus, you have to keep it charged! :) But having your own current information in it is a great idea - it takes me several months to be able to answer immediately when someone asks me for my information.
SpouseBuzz was really fun yesterday! I put up my own blog so that people can ask questions about moving to Japan and being stationed there. I hope to go back one day!

My poor son had to have a security clearance for his first job. He had to come up with addresses for the last 10 years, and list someone who had known him then.
We were scrambling for our PHYSICAL address in Germany. We knew the APO, but not the German address for our house on base.
I thought, how easy, I'll just go online and check the base map for the name of the street. Recent renovations to Ramstein base housing have torn down our old building, and "erased" our street! I got lucky, and found a copy of a bank transfer slip.
