Fit Club: Breakfast
May 16, 2009|
In addition to cranking up the exercise, I've been changing my eating. A lot. I'm actually trying to change more gradually because I don't want to set myself up for a big crash by trying to change things too much.
I would love to hear your ideas for good, healthy, low-calorie breakfasts. I usually eat one of three things: either scrambled eggs with onions, peppers, tomatoes & spinach, or cottage cheese with a chopped up green apple and a few chopped cashews, or a tortilla with veggies & Laughing Cow cheese, toasted. Those seem to work for me, and I enjoy them, but I would like to expand my menu just a little bit. I'm not a big cereal girl, unless it has those little magic dried strawberry slices in it, but I might be convinced if I find the right cereal.
So, SpouseBUZZers, let us know what you eat for breakfast. I can't wait to hear!

Oatmeal is always a good filler..I hate eating so I tend to eat crap that fills me up..doesn't have to taste good. Also we have 2 "buckets" of it and I refuse to buy cereal until it's all freaking gone so help me...
Also what about a banana and piece of toast..if you're worried about carbs you can always do the Sprouted Bread (I think that's the name) it has a low hit to your insulin levels.
Hard boiled eggs are also good for quick eating and a good fill of protein.
What about apples and peanut butter..nice protein and good fruit.

My fave low fat breakfast : Whole Wheat French Toast
Use egg whites w/ skim milk, 1/2 tsp vanilla, a dash cinnamon. Dip 100 % whole wheat bread into egg mixture and cook in a pan sprayed w/ Pam spray. Serve w/ lowfat or fat free yogurt and fresh fruit instead of butter and syrup. Gives you protien and fiber, as well as fruit. Enjoy!

i like to eat 1/2 a grapefruit and some toast...the Sara Lee Lite Multi-grain bread is excellent and is 90 calories for two slices. Also Smart Balance butter is only 50 calories per tablespoon. Can you tell I am a calorie counter?

not a recipe but a breakfast-related tip that worked for me: make breakfast your heaviest meal of the day, dinner your lightest, and lunch somewhere in between. you don't necessarily even have to modify the type of food (although the healthier, the better obviously). the idea is to consume more calories right before you expend the most calories (which is typically in the daytime when you're out and about). this simple change helped me lose weight pretty effortlessly. add consistent exercise to this meal-plan and you'll see even better results!

I'm not a big cereal fan either, but I found that I really enjoy Total Cinnamon Crunch. It tastes similar to Cinnamon Toast Crunch, but has a lot less sugar and tons of cinnamon. Cinnamon has a lot of health benefits, one being it revs up your metabolism. -Great way to start the day! Smoothies are yummy. I buy a big container of Stonyfield Farm vanilla yogurt and Silk Very Vanilla soy milk, then mix in different frozen or fresh fruit. Yesterday I made one with Dole frozen black cherries and a few semi-sweet chocolate chips. It was delicious. Whole wheat english muffins and frozen waffles can be topped with fruit, cottage cheese, tomatoes, avocados, eggs, etc. Just remember to eliminate all or all but one of the yolks when you make eggs... each yolk has 5 grams of fat, and that really adds up if you're trying to cut back. Instant whole-grain Cream of Wheat is filling. 3/4 cup of boiling water to a packet, then mix in anything you'd like. I used honey, unsweetened applesauce, cinnamon, and a splash of soy milk today. If you don't like soy, try almond milk. I think both are so much sweeter and better in everything than salty skim milk. :) Hope that helps!

I love Jamba Juice, but with 3 kids 6 and under, who has time for a 1/2 hour round trip?
I recreate their breakfast smoothie with healthier options:
almond butter, soy or coconut milk, fresh or frozen banana, 8oz of ice per serving, a squirt of Hershey's syrup, and top it with a flax seed pumpkin granola (which I get at Costco).
Another smoothie recipe: strawberries, bananas, plain yogurt, nut butter, soymilk and ice with the granola on it. This one's on the menu.
I like to add a couple of teaspoons of soy protein powder to my smoothies to stay satisfied longer.
