What Are You Watching?
January 28, 2009|
We were iced in today. This is something I'm still getting used to, after more than five years on the East Coast.
The kids and I retreated into what we normally do whenever we're stuck in the house or we need to retreat from the world for a bit - we watched movies all day.
Of course, the movies we watch depend on our situation, and we have several family "classics."
When it's cold outside and there are sick children we watch Auntie Mame - the one with Rosalind Russell. The kids and I love the humor in the movie, but they can only sit through it if they are sick. Same with Little Shop of Horrors and The Sound of Music.
When we're snowed or iced in and we're all well, we tend to watch funny movies. A lot of Adam Sandler for some reason. I think it is the poop humor.
When it's too hot to play outside in the summer, we watch Labyrinth.
And when I missed the last two SpouseBUZZ Live events, I sat myself down in a funk and watched Steel Magnolias back to back with We Were Soldiers. I have to tell you - I really missed my girls.
I think it's interesting how military families make comforting routines in the midst of the chaos of a life that is constantly changing. In our family, we use movies to make up for some of the uncertainties. We may not know where we'll be living at this time next year for sure - but we know that if we're snowed in it will be time to pull out the Adam Sandler flicks.
Do any of your families have "comfort movies"? What are they?

We love Cat in the Hat, and Dad doesn't, so it is perfect for when he is gone. I think that Mike Myers is hysterical in the Cat role.
The Princess Bride is a family favorite that everyone enjoys, if you can hear the dialogue over people quoting it before it is said.
I'm anxious to hear what everyone else likes!

Major Payne was wildly popular in my house while the boys were growing up--that, and Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. Now that the boys are men, they--and their dad--still quote often from both movies. :)

I watched Romancing the Stone so much as a kid I have much of it still memorized. "What's it gonna be, Angelina?"

Pillow Talk... and seasons of Frasier have the same calming, happy, "nevermind all the crap you're dealing with" effect :-).

I don't know if my hubby will appreciate my putting this but I am a sucker for ABC Family type chick flicks (Princess Diaries, Cinderella Story, Chasing Liberty), all the cheesy teenage girl movies and I love to curl up on the couch with my favorite throw and watch them, but so does my husband, lol. Think he has a thing for twenty something actresses trying to pull of 16?? Hmmm, hehe. But when I am homesick and think of my dad I always pop in The American President with Michael Duglass and Annette Benning and I recite every line to that movie, just like my dad and I used to do.

I love the old movie musicals. "Singing in the rain", "Meet me in St Louis", "On the town", anything with Gene Kelly or Judy Garland. Made my daughter sit through "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers". Once she got passed the begginning, she enjoyed it.
We are also hopelessy hooked on any version of "Pride and Predudice".

Back before kids had DVD's to watch in the car on trips...our boys (hubby included) would go thru the entire movie of Princess Bride and Private Eyes. Those are both favorites of ours to this day, but the DIL's are bringing to the family their own set of favorites one does "all" old musicals and my #2 son is starting to know all those songs too! :)

My husband always reverts to Miracle. I am partial to Raising Arizona myself.

SotS- I LOVE The Princess Bride! We can't watch this movie b'c it's so hard for me to keep quiet and not quote it.. but then I do quietly hehe..
AFW: I also adore Labyrinth, I've gotten my kid brothers into it and we watch it on a rainy day.
As for me: A League of their Own, anything Audrey Hepburn, My Big Fat Greek Wedding (b'c my family is like them!) Without a Paddle (when I'm missing Dh)
.. I'm a sucker for a Happy Ending :)

We live outside the states so we miss regular tv deperately-when we have time that is. If it is just my husband and I we watch The Office seasons 1-4.
If it is the kids and myself we are watching "The Grinch Who Stole Christmas" all year long!

Personally, I love really girly flicks: Ever After, Clueless, and Legally Blonde are my three favorites.
Together, my husband and I really love GalaxyQuest. I never tire of that movie. :)
Sweetie likes to watch Band of Brothers on military holidays. He also watches Law and Order whenever he's in the TV room using the computer and needs background noise. We only have three seasons, and he's been through each of them many times. Time to buy him season four . . .

I love sci-fi of any kind. My husband loves star wars but I am a trekie. I like sappy love movies but only when he is home. He wont watch with me though. We both love any British movie or tv series we can get. Dr Who is the best.

When the snow falls and I know I can't go anywhere, my three boys go running for cover! They know this means 6 hours of the BBC version of "Pride and Prejudice"! I simply can't help myself - Collin Firth is the best Darcy ever!!!! They will occasionally join me, but they rarely last for the long haul!
They eventually retreat to the wonderful world of sports' movies: Miracle, Invincible, Rudy, Rocky, Radio and our newest favorite "The Express"! I will happily join them once I've had my Jane fix!
Actually, we're supposed to get slammed with more snow on Monday, so I might be back in the house - will stock up on some of the above suggestions at Blockbuster this weekend! Esp. Princess Bride, which is even a favorite with the hubby!
This year I'll actually be able to enjoy the rotten, miserable weather! For the first time in the four winters we've been here, Papa Bear is home for the snow shoveling season! Woo Hoo!
