Hello, House? He's Not Gone Yet!
January 29, 2009|
You know about deployment gremlins? Those things that happen when your spouse is deployed, the things that make you crazy? Since we've been doing this for a few years, I've come to expect the unexpected after my husband deploys. I figure that we'll have an emergency room visit, a household disaster, or a major car malfunction. Maybe all three if we're lucky.
What I didn't expect was to hear a persistent drip, drip, drip in my house yesterday. I mean, he's home on predeployment leave, but he's not gone yet. Apparently my house didn't get his travel schedule. It decided that the drain line from my kitchen sink was going to burst without waiting for him to leave.
Despite the fact that my guest bedroom no longer has a ceiling, and I can't do dishes, and the floor might be wrecked, I can't get past chuckling that my husband was here to experience all the fun. It's just so improbable.
Maybe this means that the actual deployment will be without excitement.
Nah, probably not.

Plumbing problems are awful! AWFUL!

aw man... that sucks like a Dyson (thanks SFW...) but yeah, a little he he he, since he is there to witness/call repairmen/put up with the "between 8 and 5" (show up at 6pm) mess/delay/mess... he he.
but for the future #knocking on wood/forehead (cause pressboard doesn't count)# --- scattering Garlic to ward off gremlins (HEY, it works on vampires!)... chanting....

Good lord... at least he was there for it! The surprises never cease.
In 14 months
-I lost a job
-totaled my car 24 hours to the minute after I said goodbye for R&R
-got my appendix out
-lost another job 8 days after getting my appendix out, forcing me to move all alone to podunk, LA
-and just for good measure had the worst homecoming story ever.

I locked my self out of my house last night. 20 degrees out.

i feel for you. really.
unfortunately i've been there and done that - with hubby here thank goodness. feeder hose to faucet came loose under our kitchen sink. that sounds so simple. but boy oh boy was it costly - 9 months and 20K. we had just moved in and I think the inspector tugged on the hose to check it and viola - it burst a few days later when we were on vacation. FLOOD.
I have one important word for you - INSURANCE!
USAA bought us meals until the kitchen was repaired. Save every receipt. Later discovered that since our kitchen was considered condemned that we actually could have moved out to a furnished place on our insurance - but that would have been too many changes. I really oreferred to rough it and stay at home. we made do with carry out, delivery, crock pot, microwave and hot plate on top of the washer/dryer which is adjacent to the basement family room.
we splurged and got upgrade to counters (yes, the water ruined one of them - the one the sink sat in - so they all were replaced) and new appliances. So many things improved in our kitchen - became a complete re-model. 9 months. wow what memories.
but I sit here in the new kitchen and you will do the same one day. you will survive!
but yucky yucky. so sorry to hear about this. dang water - it is so important for survival but also so destructive!
my best to you and yours as you fix the mess! what doesn't kill us makes us stronger, right?

Aww.. those gremlins! Hopefully you'll be able to get it fixed soon.
I do chuckle at the fact that your Dh was still there. They so *rarely* are when things go haywire. I've often wonder if my Dh thinks I'm making these things up or something lol..

my "favorite" deployment disaster (there have been so many, including a ceiling waterfall) was when the coil in the garage door snapped, permanently closing my garage door with my car inside. Luckily he was gone so I could use HIS car. There are emergency 24 hour garage door people. Yay!!
