The End Of Mail
November 22, 2008|
The one thing my husband wants on deployment is letters. Even if we get to chat online or talk on the phone often, he likes handwritten letters. And I like writing, so it's a win-win.
Thus it's always a little bittersweet for me when we near the end of the deployment and have to cut off the flow of mail. It should be such an exciting feeling, but sometimes it makes me feel disconnected from my husband, that I can't compose a thought and throw it in the mailbox.
But the end of mail means the end of deployment is nigh. And that is definitely a good thing.

Why do the letters have to stop. You can still write letters to your husband. It's kind of romantic. He may not be far away but he will still enjoy reading about your love for him.

I think I have blogged about this before too. It's more stopping the packages for me, as well as the letters. I hate knowing that if he calls and has a need, I can run to the store and the post office the next day to try to fix it.

It's equally depressing from the other end. Up to that point, you always have the hope (often crushed) that you will get a letter from home or a package that you don't expect. But you reach that tipping point, and you know that there won't be any more mail... For us, our active operations stopped at about the same time (since we had to turn over our specialized equipment to our replacements), so along with the cessation of mail came the cessation of purpose. Only the knowledge that we were headed home kept me from a serious case of the blues.
Also, I bought myself another knife, and that always helps.

Yes it is a good thing! I hope he gets my card in time- if not it'll arrive at your house in about 4 months. :)
