At SpouseBUZZ LIVE San Antonio, we had a discussion about civilian misconceptions of military life. It was really very entertaining. My adult family and friends have a better understanding of military life since I became a milspouse, but apparently their understanding hasn't trickled down to the next generation.
A few weeks ago, my nephew and niece were visiting. My nephew, who is nine, looked at me and asked if my husband makes me do push-ups. "Does he say, drop and give me twenty, Aunt Andi?" Funny how the little ones tend to equate all military men with Drill Sergeants, isn't it?
I laughed and said, "Well no, of course not, I make him do push-ups."
I think my nephew is duly confused now....

Too funny. A few years back, when my hubby was coaching soccer for 4th-6th graders, I was helping out trying to get the kids to focus during practice and pay attention. Usually, if the kids were too exuberant, they ended up being tasked with a few push-ups as penance for their behavior. My hubby would assign them and usually do them along side the child. As I was trying to get a rowdy bunch to listen to me, the one boy sneered at me and said "Does coach make you do push ups at home too?" I answered that "No, I had the power to make the coach do push ups". He looked at me in awe and it definitely gained me a little respect from that point forward with the kids.

My husband encourages our kids to do pushups. I think it's embarrassing, but he thinks it builds character or something.
It seems to be paying off. The other day I was at the elementary school to take pictures of a race for the yearbook. I heard the PE teacher tell the kids to warm up.
A minute later my friend nudged my arm and pointed over to my 7 year old daughter. There she was doing one-armed pushups. In her purple skort and braids....
