It's Not a Marathon, But It Might As Well Be
July 14, 2008|
Thank you, Liberal Army Wife. At your site, I saw that the Marine Corps Marathon has a 10K Walk/Run. I know that it isn't a marathon, but for weak kneed, way past a healthy weight me, it might as well be. I've been feeling sorry for myself because it can be hard to exercise when you're the full-time grown-up on duty. I was searching for some motivation and I think this might be it. October 26 is more than three months away and I'm sure that I can get myself together by then. So far, I've convinced my mom and my friend to join me, and I registered today.
Anyone else want to join us?

How cool!! Thanks...I am walking to raise money for G-Bear's organization - Sew Much Comfort.

I've been doing the 10K since it started -- this will be my third year.
Starting last year, my run has been dedicated to raising money for the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund. This year my boyfriend will finally be able to run with me, which I'm really excited about - two years straight we've purchased an entry for him, and Marine Corps stuff has interfered.
VyperGirl is also on board to walk with LAW, and I would love to see some other SpouseBuzzers there. :)

Is it like the Army Ten Miler where you have to keep up a pace? I know their's is a 15 min mile.

ARW, that is a good question. I've searched the site and don't see any indication of that, and they do specifically mention the necessary pace for the marathon portion of the event. I'm guessing that there must be some type of time limit as they can't keep the streets closed forever.
Loquita, do you know? Thanks.

Not to take any runners/walkers away from an outstanding organization like Sew Much Comfort, but as a surviving spouse I have to put in a plug for another organization for anyone interested. The Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS) also has charity slots for the marathon, 10K and Army Ten Miler. Check out www.taps.org for more info.
Good luck to all runners!

GoldStarWife, Thank you for the suggestion. I'm sure that there are many runners and walkers who don't know how to have their participation help a charitable organization. I appreciate your input.
