What's In a Name?
June 6, 2008|
Yesterday at lunch, I was standing in line in front of a soldier in a restaurant. At the time, it didn't quite register, but later it dawned on me what this person's name was. I was standing by CPT Kirk.
I think we've done this before, but for me it never gets old. Share the funny rank+name that you've come across...

My squad leader was SGT Major.

I believe it was in Marna's book (don't hold me to it), but she knew a Major Major.

Oh, let's see...
Capt and then Major Horney
Capt. America
Major Minor

Oh and while this isn't a rank/name thing, Soul Sister had the unique opportunity of meeting a Marine officer named.....
Richard Weed

I haven't had the opportunity to encounter too many people yet, but I saw a guy whose last name was Broccoli the other day at a homecoming!

I know of MAJ Mann, and I've seen a MAJ Slayer. We have a contest in our family to see who can locate the coolest Army name.

I recently met one named Bigalow.. And then there was the guy named Focker.. - I guess Hollywood's been checking into the military for names :p hehe

JD's very first battalion commander's name was LTC Rambo.
Posted by: RedLegMeg | 06/06/2008 at 10:46
I used to be in the same unit with a Sergeant Sargent.

Sometimes when I was bored I used to open up the global address listing and type in random words to see if that pulled up somebody's name. You could find all sorts of weird stuff that way. Just now, I tried to search for "pooch" and only got as far as "poo" because that was some poor soul's last name!
Posted by: akinoluna | 06/06/2008 at 11:33
There was an Airman who used the guard the gate named "Phuc"
And this isn't a military name, but whenever I see Major Garrett speaking on Fox News, I think, "Shouldn't he be a Lieutenant Colonel by now?"
Posted by: airforcewife | 06/06/2008 at 11:38
Another one...I went to AIT with a Private Dick (you better believe he got picked on for that one).
Posted by: Lisa | 06/06/2008 at 11:45
haha I actually knew a Major Garrett, who did eventually become Lieutenant Colonel Garrett ... he's retired now.
Posted by: TomboyWarrior | 06/06/2008 at 12:27
I knew a "Capt Morgan." (Just like the alcohol :)

There's a gentleman named Frank Schmuck running for the AZ House. In an interview he said he decided to get out of the Air Force as a Captain as he didn't want to get promoted to being a "Major Schmuck."

Well, long ago, we knew a Sgt. Sargent - he went to Mother Rucker and became Mr. Sargent and then, I assume, Chief Sargent. but what would you do if you WERE HIS Sgt?????

CPT Kirk? Either there is 2 of them are me and Sarah make fun of the same guy! My husband gets so upset when I make that joke. I get the long speech on all the guy has done for him so I am trying really hard to stop. In front of Hubby at least.
Posted by: angela | 06/06/2008 at 14:41
Angela -- "My" CPT Kirk was a female, so there are two of them! Or they're married to each other!
One of my favorites: At a ball we once sat at the table with a major. I didn't think of it, but my husband leaned over and whispered to me, "Poor man. It must've been a long seven years as CPT Hook." I nearly peed my pants.
Posted by: Sarah | 06/06/2008 at 14:51
My dad was a Captain Kirk, too - and a Trekkie, at that! :-)

Oh, and I thought of another one! A friend of a friend joined the Navy out of high school and promptly became Seaman Stain. Ewww.

Has anyone come acroos a Col. Sanders? (roflol..)
Posted by: Penny | 06/06/2008 at 15:27
I work with a CPT Hook, and when my DH was a Drill SGT he had a PVT Parts in this plt. The gave him a really hard time.
Posted by: Stevesprincess | 06/06/2008 at 15:29
Yes to the Col. Sanders from my corner.

A friend of mine had her first child in Hawaii - Her OB was Dr. Ham and the pediatrician was Dr. Bacon!

Let's see, I've known...
a Sgt Majors
a LCDR Admiral
a Maj A***ole -- sorry, that's what they used to call me, I think!
Posted by: Robbo | 06/06/2008 at 21:17
Major Nutter.
Totally inappropriate, but true.
Posted by: Erin Rages | 06/06/2008 at 22:15
We had Major Music (but he wasn't a music major).
While this may not seem funny...follow along....you'll laugh.
The 1ID Commanding General was Brigadier General Carter Ham. My husband, the band commander, brought two soldiers up to meet him...absolutely NOT taking into consideration who these soldiers were....
A photo ensued: SPC Carter, BG Carter Ham, and SPC Ham....
And we also had a CPT America, but she was a woman...
And off-color, but true: Major Wood, CPT Cummings, and Major Balz (pronounced BALLS)

roflol.. You're right Sarah, these never get old!
Posted by: Penny | 06/06/2008 at 23:46
There is/was a Cpt Hook @ Ft Lewis :)

There was a pilot in one of MacGyver's units named "Mister Martian".
We've also known a "Mister Mister", a "Major Payne", a "Major Butts", and and LTs "Light" and "Bright" who were in the same unit.
There was also a "Major Stake" but she was female so everyone called her "Major Miss Stake". Oy.
And my favorite - "Major Lee" as in "majorly". I'd see him and say, "Major Lee!" to greet him. He'd answer back with, "Majorly what???"
It was funny then.

Our clinic once had a Sgt. Slaughter.

I still chuckle every time my son, now a 2LT talks about his PMS (professor of military science). My husband assures me they have been called that even when he was in college rotc back in the seventies. Ha

We had a guest speaker @ a dinner once named COL Sanders.
I once lived across the hall from a guy in the Air Force.
Never knew his rank, but his last name was "Goodbody"...and, that name certainly suited him. :)

Ann M. - My husband always checks the promotions in his rate. Not sure if it is the same one as your roommate, but he pointed out whatever she was now and how they liked when she was Seaman Sample. Ha.
Posted by: wifeunit | 06/09/2008 at 11:46
My husband recently had to discipline a "Private Word". We also knew a "Major Morgan" when DH was in ROTC, and definitely made the "Captain Morgan" connection.
