A Time to Remember: A Walk for Freedom

FacebookXPinterestEmailEmailEmailShare

This past weekend, my husband and I went away for a couple of days. As luck would have it, there was a Marine Corps reunion going on at the hotel where we stayed. The reunion had what looked to be veterans from Korea and Vietnam. My husband looked at me and said, "this is right up your alley." It was heartwarming to watch the old timers reconnect and spend some time together. Time remembering the good ol' days, or, in some cases, the bad ol' days. The bottom line was that these Marines and their spouses were there because they felt it was important to stay connected and to "remember."

September 11 is fast approaching. We will be remembering. We will remember where we were when we heard the news. We will remember how it felt when we saw the horrifying images of buildings collapsing, buildings burning and people running for their lives. Those of us in the military community knew pretty quickly that the terrorist attacks were about to change our lives forever. Good-byes were on the horizon, probably sooner rather than later. September 11 is a day to remember and honor the sacrifices of ordinary citizens, our armed forces and their families.

For the past two years, my husband and I have participated in the National Freedom Walk. It was an incredible experience, and one we feel fortunate to have participated in. People from all walks of life came together "to reflect on the lives lost on September 11, renew our commitment to freedom and honor our veterans, past and present."

This year, Freedom Walks will take place all over the country. Leave it to my fellow Army wives to contribute to the effort. A group of them have organized the first overseas walks. Hooah! Check here to see if a Freedom Walk will take place near you and if so, please plan to attend. It's an amazing experience and one you shouldn't miss. If a walk is not scheduled near you, why not create one? You can. See here for details.

In advance of the Freedom Walks, tomorrow from 1:00 - 1:30 p.m. EDT, we will be speaking with Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense, Allison Barber about the upcoming Freedom Walks and America Supports You. Join us tomorrow for a special edition of SpouseBUZZ Talk Radio.
