Making Dad Feel Special

|

My husband isn't a father yet, but I found myself thinking about Father's Day this morning and all the deployed fathers around the world who won't be home to celebrate their special day.  I was just wondering if you'd like to share with us what you and your children do to make Dad feel special when he can't be home for Father's Day.  Or, if you're the father who's home while mom is gone, what you plan to do on your special day.

My husband is home but in 2005, I made sure he got all his packages early. I sent one and each of the kids sent one. I put in everyday stuff and special items. I wanted it to seem like we were together. I also did the e-card thing. We already had the webcam in place so we set aside a certain time for him to call in.

We were able to talk for a while but as more people were waiting for the internet, we ended the call. Hey, they all want to call home, right?

This year, we're just staying home and then doing dinner and maybe a movie. It's always simple because everyday is Father's Day for him. He's just glad to be home and we are sure glad to have him here. As it is, the next deployment is just around the corner.

Dad is away, but we spent the morning at the park, the afternoon making garden stepping stones for him.

Oh and The Collective told him what they bought him for Fathers Day!!

nice.....

He will visit in a couple of weeks...we will celebrate then!

This year Dad is gone and he did not request anything special nut we did send him his favorite game in handheld form: Yahtzee. He has almost worn it out already. Two years ago when he was gone we went to Build A Bear and built a Bear and had a voice recorder of us all saying "LOVE YOU DADDY!!!!" We were able to go in the middle of the day so no background noise was on it. We also make sure we send DVDs and recorded shows he loves to watch. And I am getting into writing a letter just about every other day. We do IM alot but I like writing the letters and adding my body spray to them so Hubby does not have to smell the funk all day. :)

Paralyzed Veteran's of America (www.pva.org) has a free ecard service that you can use to send ecards to either someone you know or a hospitalized veteran in a specific state. Look for the US Flag stamp on the left sidebar for a link to the ecard section. There are three ecards specifically for Father's Day that look pretty nice. I used the service to send one to a deployed friend last Veteran's Day and he loved it.

My husband won't be here for this Father's Day, but in celebration we mailed off a card and a package this week, and we have sent plenty of photos through email, which he loves. We'll "make it up" when he gets to visit on his R&R leave :-)

I made my husband Mark, who is deployed to Iraq, a video of the kids. He couldn't wait - he already opened it. He said it was the best gift he could have received, but also pointed out that I definitely don't have a future career in videography! Am already working on another one for his birthday in August.

My husband is on his first deployment this Father's Day. What I did for him was right before he left on June 10th was I bought him a laptop so he could stay in touch with us all, and then I took our 7 month old daughter to a hallmark store and let her pick out the card and helped her sign it (she actually did a really good job)and I bought him a new wedding band since his had diamonds on it and put it in a care package full of all his favorite things and new pictures of the baby and myself. He absolutely loved it, and he said that the pictures make his bunk feel more like home.

my hubs is still in the sandbox so i sent over an ICEE maker with three different flavor syrups. he said it was a big hit!

My husband is on his first deployment to Iraq, and this is the first Father's Day he has missed with us. I helped the kids make cards for him and a couple of pictures with fabric paint and stickers. We also sent him some movies. I sent him an ecard as well since the package won't be there yet.

My husband is deployed this Father's Day. The kids made actual size cut outs of themselves and colored them and we mailed them to him. It was along the lines of Flat Stanly. I don't think he has received them yet. I am anxious to hear what he thinks of them.
